Types of Files in Search (XP Pro with SP2)

In my Search Results dialog box, the Type of File drop-down list shows only four file types: 3GPP Movie Importer, 3GPP2 Movie Importer, H.323 Internet Telephony, and Microsoft Agent Character File. All of the file types for my installed apps (Word, Excel, etc.) have disappeared from that list. But when I go to Tools => Folder Options => File Types tab, I can still see hundreds of registered file types.

I searched the registry, but I wasn't able to find 3GPP or 3GPP2, so I don't know where this list is generated from.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

3GPP Movie Importer and 3GPP2 Movie Importer are default values of HKLMSOFTWAREClassesQuickTime.3gp, HKLMSOFTWAREClassesQuickTime.3gpp and HKLMSOFTWAREClassesQuickTime.3g2, HKLMSOFTWAREClassesQuickTime.3gp2 keys respectively.

Your Type of file drop-down list in Search window must contain many more file types; are you sure there is no slider on the right side of drop-down list?
Try to turn the wheel (middle button) on your mouse when you open drop-down list, is it scrolling down?

Glad to hear that it "must" contain many more file types -- but it doesn't. The four that I mentioned are all that can be seen, including when you scroll.

Can you post on image? Sometimes it just helps to see what it looks like. It does sound quite atypical and difficult to explain. So, seeing is believing!

Convert the Print Screen image to a .jpg for posting. Thanks.

When you did this search what kind of limits did you set for the search?

No other limits. As soon as I clicked "More Advanced Options," I saw that the Type of File list (which normally starts with "All Files and Folders") had been truncated to those four. Restarting, etc. had no effect.

The attached image is a composite of two screencaps. The one on the left shows the *entire* "Type of Files" drop-down list in the Search Results dialog box. The one on the right shows a small portion of the hundreds of file types in the Folder Options dialog box.

What is this Logins folder that you have the search limited to to?

Just a random folder I picked to get a screencap. Works the same with every folder.

Re: Types of Files in Search (XP Pro with SP2)

Hmmm... I tested mine and the File Types drop down box appears to be populated "on the fly" -- meaning it is actively loading the files types in real time, presumably reading the Registry as it does this. But this only happens the first time I open it. The next time, it is 'pre-populated'.

You may want to try remove the check from the Search Options | Type box, close down the Search window, and reboot your system. Maybe, just maybe, it will force your computer to re-populate the box... Just a thought.

I don't see a Type check box, just the Type of File drop-down list. Maybe you can post a screencap with the check box indicated.

But anyway, I've closed the Search Results dialog box many times and rebooted many times since the problem first appeared. It isn't being repopulated from the File Types list.

Hmmm... again.

XP Pro sp2 Search Explorer bar. I think I must have changed this to "classic search" -- but I don't quite remember how. And I haven't had my coffee.

Re: Types of Files in Search (XP Pro with SP2)

I also don't know why your Search Results dialog box looks different from mine. I work with three computers running Win XP Pro SP2, and they all show the Type of File drop-down list, without a check box -- though only one of them is missing the expected items on that list. If you ever figure out what you changed to get that check box, let me know.

In the meantime, if anyone has seen this problem before and knows how to fix it, please let me know!

Thanks,

Dan

Found it. It is in Tweak UI. Again, it might be worth the effort... Somehow you have to make the Explorer shell reload that list. I'll spend more time on this later -- if I have it.

If for some reason you don't want to use TweakUI, the registry edit is described here.

You could try reinstalling the search companion. Here's the steps:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.
