    Outlook Express Failure (OE6)

Occasionally when I highlight an email in OE6 I get this message.

    "Message could not be displayed
Outlook Express encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

I get the same whichever email message I click on. I have 512 MB memory and 257 GB free disk space. I have to close OE and reopen it and everything is fine again. What can be causing this and what should I do to avoid the problem?

No, I don't have McAfee VirusScan installed. I use Norton AV 2007. I do have McAfee SiteAdvisor.

Next time it happens open Task Manager, click on the processes tab, and check the amount of memory OE is using. Could be an OE memory leak. Maybe you want to try installing the Live Mail part of Windows Live. It is the successor to OE.

If I check the amount of memory OE is using, what constitutes a leak? When OE is running normally it can be anything from 8000K to 17000K. What is normal and what is a leak? And if there is a leak what do I do to fix it?

Often you can tell if there is a leak if the memory usage just keeps increasing the longer you have the program open no matter what you do in the program. Some increase and decrease during usage is normal. Under most circumstances, you can't do anything about a leak. The program vendor (Microsoft in this case) must fix it.

This problem is continuing to occur. Often when the error message appears I find that the last couple of months' worth of emails are missing. Fortunately, so far, if I close OE and then restart the PC they reappear. Am I in danger of permanently losing these emails? If so, what can I do to avert this?

See <post:=679,593>post 679,593</post:>. Windows Live Mail is an entirely separate <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> program. So, it may not have the same issues.
