    Charting question - Linking (2003)

    Greetings all,

I have a question. First the background. I have a couple of spreadsheets used to track data, I want to make a "summary" spreadsheet using a few graphs from each file.

How can I have the graphs automatically update in the New file relative to the others?

    Thanks,
    Brad

Do you already have charts in the "couple of spreadsheets"? If so, you can simply copy and paste them into the summary spreadsheet - they will use the data from the original workbooks, and they will be updated automatically (unless you turn off automatic updating).
Note: This doesn't apply to changes in the formatting of the charts, only to changes in the source data.

    Hans,
Yes, I have the charts in the other spreadsheets, and I have copied them, but I am not familar with the auto updating. Where is that exactly?

Is is spreadsheet specific, or chart specific?

    Thks,
    Brad

In the Edit | Links dialog, there is a button "Startup Prompt..." that lets you specify if and how links will be updated. The Edit | Links menu item is only enabled if your workbook contains links to other files.

    Ok,
I did as you indicated, but when I open the summary file the graphs are not updating. Any thoughts?

Re: Charting question - Linking (2003)

say, I think I just figured it out. I looked at the "source data" selection for one of the graphs in the summary file and I see what is going on. I assumed that when I filter the pivot table, the "copied" graph would update. does not seem to be the case. So, I think I can go on from here.

    Thanks much,
    Brad
