    Setting View Option as Default

    Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
Is there a way to set My Computer's View Options to "List" instead of the default "Large icons"?

Re: Setting View Option as Default

If you don't have the desktop update from IE installed, it's a little bit tricker. The best way to customize this stuff is to download and install <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.xteq.com/>X-Setup</A>.

If you have the desktop update (i.e. quicklaunch bar etc) you can tell Windows to use the current view settings as the default for all windows. Remember that there are two types of window views - single pane (My Computer) and dual-pane (explorer). In NT this is under View => Folder Options.

Many thanks. I didn't know there was anything out there better than TweakUI. However, I may not be able to get permission to install this. You say that without this tweaker, "it's a little bit trickier." You seem to imply that it is possible. Can you point me in the right direction?
    Thanks again.

Re: Setting View Option as Default

It (My Computer) appears to remember the last used setting here, regardless of how Explorer was last used.
But I assume you are trying to get list view the next time, even if it was left in Folder view?

    Try running from Run:<pre>"%SystemRoot%explorer.exe" /n, yourmachinename</pre>

That seems to bring up My Computer in list view every time on one of our NT4 SP6 machines here.
If it works, just create another shortcut.

Re: Setting View Option as Default

Not impossible. By trickier I meant that you have to go through some additional steps. But the key here is that in an NT installation that does not include the desktop update, there are several options simply missing from View => Folder Options.

Without the desktop update or X-Setup installed, I don't know how to pull it off short of a registry edit - and even checking there didn't yield much in the way of how that process works. Unfortunately I don't have an NT station without the desktop update that I can check on either <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>. If do find something I'll pass it along!
