    TABLES (Word 2007/2003)

Is there any way of setting up a table in which the left hand column is numbered consecutively so that if you add or delete rows the numbers self-correct? I have found a work around (create a table with more rows than you can need, enter the numbers manually, then move the material in the other columns around by cut-and-paste) but it is laborious. Am I missing something obvious?

Create a table with the number of columns you want; the number of rows is not important.
Select the first column by clicking just above it (the mouse pointer should change to a downward arrow).
Either apply a style that includes numbering, such as "1. List Number", or apply numbering through Format | Bullets and Numbering...
The numbering will adjust itself automatically when you insert, delete or move rows.

I was right - it was obvious!

    Many thanks.
