    Control Panel (XP SP2)

I just bought a new PC with this loaded; my old one died. Using the Control Panel I'm not able to change the mouse to use a single click to open a file or folder; the option is greyed out. Also I can't set the default view for folders and files to "details"; the option to check to vies all folders in a certain way is greyed out too. I've changed these settings on other machines but this one has me baffled. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    John

Sounds like you are NOT logged in as a Administrator, just a user or guest.

Try going to Control Panel and clicking on User Accounts to see what log ons are available. You may have to create a new account with you as an Administrator.

Was this new machine installed and setup by someone other than yourself?

    Bob,

I'm logged on as Administrator and there are no other accounts except the default Guest account. I purchased this PC new and set it up myself with my software and the various settings I like.

Try using the file in the "Folder options - restricted" section at F Page - Windows XP from A to Z to change the registry. If that does not work, are you using XP Home or Pro?

    Joe,

That didn't change anything. I'm running XP Home, SP2.

    Thanks,

Can you post an image -- to make sure we know exactly what settings you are talking about?

It's a plain vanilla 2 button, scroll wheel mouse with no special software. I don't think it's the mouse; I just can't get the option to not be greyed out.

Can't get an image small enough. From Windows Explorer, select Tools / Folder Options on the General Tab, the third option is to use a single click to open a file. On the View Tab, when you click on the "Apply to All Folders" button, nothing changes.

You might want to try downloading the MS Intellipoint Software or maybe just the drivers will do. Both are <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> and might enable those greyed out functions.

It's the mouse that worked on the crashed PC. I've tried another mouse on this one to no avail. It must be a setting somewhere that turns off the option of changing to a single click to open a file or folder.

Have you turned ON any of the "Accessibility" features?
As one of these may have "Locked" this setting.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
