    customizing a toolbar icon (Word 2003 SP3)

I have some macros showing on the menu toolbar with text only. Is there a way of adding custom icons instead of the ones that Word presents?

    Select Tools | Customize...
    Right-click a custom item.

The popup menu has a section that lets you set the style for the item:
    - Default Style
    - Text Only (Always)
    - Text Only (In Menus)
    - Image and Text.

The popup menu also has options for changing the icon:
    - Paste Button Image (only available if there is an image on the clipboard)
    - Edit Button Image... (opens a primitive editor)
    - Change Button Image (choose from a predefined set)

You can copy any image to the clipboard and paste it; it will be resized to 17x17 pixels, so it's best to start with a small image.

I have a jpg favicon file image. I right click on the file name and select copy.
I go to my Word menu, open it for customization
I open the popup menu over the text button and the paste button option is always greyed out
    What am I missing?

You're copying the file to the clipboard, not the image.
You should open the jpg file in a graphics program such as Paint, IrfanView, FastStone Image Viewer, whatever you prefer.
Select the entire image (usually Ctrl+A) or the part you want to use, then press Ctrl+C to copy the image (instead of the file) to the clipboard.
Paste Button Image should then be available.
