Share names not available? (XP SP-2)

I have (had) 5 mapped shares:

One was to my "My Documents" folder, two were to folders holding various graphics, and two were to drives on another computer on my (home) network, P, N, O T and U respectively.

I just lost the three mappings to folders on my onw PC -- N, O, and P.

So I went back and disconnected the mappings in Explorer, "unshared" th folders, and started over, setting the sharing and the share names, which went fine, and then trying to re-map the shares, which did not go well.

I get an error message that the name is no longer available.

Why? What has caused this, and how do I remedy it? Why is it "broken" now after some years (probably) of fine use?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Have you tried re-booting?

Have you been plugging in hundreds of usb devices that have grabbed the drive letters?

    Have you checked <post:=679,958>post 679,958</post:>?

    Leif:

    I have tried re-booting -- several times.

I have only 4 USB devices -- keyboard/mouse wireless combo, modem, and printer.

    I'll check the post.

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Leif:

Still reviewing, but thought I should also mention:

After disconnecting the mapped folders, they do NOT appear any longer for selection to be UNMAPPED, but they DO however, show up as already existing if I go to map a letter to a folder, and browse for the folder (the named shares are still there, even though I had previously rem, oved them!).

    Chuck,

To clear all shares type the following in a command window.

NET USE * /DELETE

This just removes the connection from this PC to the shares, it DOES NOT delete anything.

Re: Share names not available? (XP SP-2)

    Stuart:

    That cleared all the shares.
But why am I getting this error when I then try to re-map a drive... the share shows up when I browse to select, and then the error.

    ??

    Did you recreate the shares?

Can you please follow ALL of the steps in Troubleshooting file shares on a home network and let us know how you get on.

    Stuart:

I will walk through all steps... we are clear that the shares that are giving me the problem are ALL folders on my (local) PC, right? They are NOT over the network. The two shares that ARE on the other PC (over the network) operate fine.

    Right?

What have you been tinkering with lately? Disabled any services?

    Joe:

Believe it or not, nothing. I haven't disabled any services, and aaamof, it just seemed to "pop up out of nowhere". I hadn't even installed anything (this time) before the issue rose up... admittedly, I don't check these particular mappings *all* the time, but fairly frequently.

Where are the share names stored? Maybe there's a file corruption.

Re: Share names not available? (XP SP-2)

    Stuart:

When I went through all the steps, everything seemed OK... no errors at all.

The one share - CWBs_Stuff - shows up in all expected places... but I cannot use it... nor "Icons" (should map to 'N', or "More Icons", should map to 'O'.The "shared folder" properties" all set fine, but I can't assign any letters to them.

When I try to map CWBs_Stuff, I get that it's "unavailable... when I try to map 'P' or 'O', I get the following error...

But again, they all show up when I browse for the share in explorer (using "Map network Drive").

Re: Share names not available? (XP SP-2)

    Now I'm well confused.

You have a share on the PC and you are trying to map that share on the same PC? I know it should work, but what a strange thing to do. Are you able to map these same shares from a different PC?

I think you should try deleting all shares on this PC. Then rebooting, recreating the shares and trying to map to them again.

Re: Share names not available? (XP SP-2)

    Stuart:

I sstarted doing it a while back... the Quicken version I was using (2000) only allowed 20 (or so) characters in the path to the data file, and the didn't work at all with "Cocuments and SettingsCWBillowMy DocumentsFinanceQuickenBILLOW1.QDF" , but did with P:FinanceQuickenBILLOW1.QDF.

And it's done fine since forever ago...

Oh, and I CAN access the shares from the other nodes in the network -- just not on mine. I also tried deleting everything and then starting over... but that didn't seem to make any difference.
