A2003 SP-3 Combo Box Issues? (a2k (9.0.6926) SP-3 Jet 4.0 SP-8)

I develop in a2k and have been delivering applications to customers using Access 2000, 2002 through Access 2003 (11.6566.8132) SP2 with no problems.

Access 2003 (11.5614.5606)
Access 2003 (11.6566.8132) SP2
Access 2003 (11.8166.8172) SP3

Iím starting to have some combo box issues with same application running on Access 2003 (11.8166.8172) SP3

One of the issues is a Combo Box with the following Row Sourse:

SELECT DISTINCTROW tbl_DL_Breed.lngBreedID, tbl_DL_Breed.strDescription,
tbl_DL_Breed.strBreedCode,
tbl_DL_Breed.ysnActive,
tbl_DL_Breed.strType,
tbl_DL_Breed.strSeqNo,
tbl_DL_Breed.lngBreedID,
tbl_DL_Breed.strApplCode,
tbl_DL_Breed.strProfileCode,
tbl_DL_Breed.strLegacy
FROM tbl_DL_Breed
WHERE (((tbl_DL_Breed.ysnActive)=Yes))
ORDER BY tbl_DL_Breed.ysnActive, tbl_DL_Breed.strDescription;

It use to display the following:

ID Description Code Active Type Seq # ID AC PC L
105 Aberdeen Terrier 104 Yes 105
106 Abyssinian Sand 105 Yes 106
107 Affenpinscher 107 Yes 107
12 AFGHAN HOUND 011 Yes 010 12 *

Using Access 2003 (11.8166.8172) SP3 the Active column is displaying -1 for Yes

Any solutions?

Thanks, John

There is an MSKB article on this problem, with some workarounds: KBAlertz.com: Combo box controls and list box controls display no value or incorrect values in Access 2003 after you install Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (I can't find it on the Microsoft site itself)

Talk about a programmers worst nightmare

I have both symptom 1 and 2 and no way to test the workarounds

Is there any way to roll back Access 2003 (11.8166.8172) SP3 to Access 2003 (11.6566.8132) SP2 or
Access 2003 (11.5614.5606)?

Thanks, John

According to Description of Office 2003 Service Pack 3:

There is no option to remove this download by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel. To remove Office 2003 SP3 from the computer, you must remove Office 2003. Then, reinstall Office 2003 from the original Office 2003 CD.

But can you demand that your customers uninstall software?

You could implement the workarounds in a test version, and ask a customer who has Access 2003 SP3 to test it. Or perhaps you could get a cheap PC on which you install Access 2003 SP3 so that you can test your databases yourself.

PS I sent you a PM, please take a look at your PostBox.

Thanks for the info

The user was running Access 2003 (11.6566.8132) SP2 on ten computers, they have no technical expertise, I am wondering how Access 2003 (11.8166.8172) SP3 got installed on just two of the their computers.

1. Does it have to be installed by the IT dept?
2. Is this a situation where it is an automatic update?
3. Are the suggested workarounds downward compatible?
4. Are there any other conversion issue from SP2 to SP3?
5. Any other forum dwellers had any SP3 issues?

Thanks, John

1) Depends on how the computers are managed.
2) Yes - if Windows has been set to download and install updates (to Windows itself and to Office 2002 or later) automatically, SP3 would have been installed when it was released (in September or October of this year)
3) As far as I know, yes.
4) Please see the link in my previous reply, there is a section on "known issues". Also see <post:=674,168>post 674,168</post:>.

Some additional links on the issue:

On Office 2003 SP3, some of you have probably heard some grumblings about apps which were working well in SP2 that are experiencing problems in SP3. I want to let you know that we're listening. There were a handful of issues that we didn't catch in our internal testing that we've got feedback from a number of different customers on. We're in the process of rolling up fixes for those issues into a patch that will be publicly available in the near future. I don't have an exact date for you yet, but keep watching the blog and I'll post here when it is ready.

Per your suggestion I reinstalled Office 2003 from original CD. Where can I find SP2? MS does a good job of hiding it.

There is a hotfix now available for SP3 that fixes this and several other problems! http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945674

Thanks for the link, but I don't think (based on past performance) that this is MS's final word on the subject. I'm going back to SP2 until the dust settles!

Thanks for the link. Installed SP2 without a hitch. Now I want to update office to all fixes up to SP3. Office Update site only allows one-at-a-time updates. Isn't there a way to select all the updates I want, like Windows Update lets you?
