So many Hubs - USB 2?

I'm running XP Pro SP-2. I have 4 USB slots that are, presumably, on the motherboard, as they were/are "built into" the case.

In addition, I added one 4-port USB PCI slot add-on.

I assume that when I look at the devices in System Properties/ Hardware, the USB devices showing as "Enhanced" are USB 2.0?

What are all the hubs? Is it possible to upgrade all to 2.0?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Re: So many Hubs - USB 2?

If you have an Enhanced Host Controller then you have support for the USB 2.0 standard on all USB ports on the motherboard. The PCI card has an Enhanced Host Controller and should support the USB 2.0 standard. It's the controller that's the interesting part.

VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller is the mobo
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller is the PCI card

You are talking about built into ports (back panel USB ports?) and added ports via PCI card. Another issue can be the internal connectors. I have seen examples were older case mounted (front) USB ports connected via cable to an (internal) mobo connector report that the device (USB memory etc.) "Can Perform Faster" if connected to an USB 2.0 port, even if the internal mobo connector for additional ports is supposed to support USB 2.0.

But in your case all the USB ports mentioned should support USB 2.0. Do you have any contrary experience?

For information about the USB 2.0 standard and nomenclature, see:

I'm not at all sure, which initiated my poking around...

I had purchased an "external" USB 2.0 hub port card (powered) that seems to be functioning with some of th USB devices but not all, so I started looking fro problem sources.

No answers as yet...

Thanks,

Argus,
I'm not sure I agree with:

"VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller is the mobo"

I added a plug in PCI to USB add on card to my system some time ago and that is what now shows as my PCIUSB addition, not the mobo.

Hello Bob,

Over here, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "... that is what now shows as my PCIUSB addition, not the mobo."

On a PC with no additional USB PCI card it can look as my attachment.

If you have added a "plug in PCI to USB add on card", why wouldn't show up as a PCIUSB addition, seems normal it shows up, but what do you mean have happened to the mobo controllers?

Please forgive me if I'm thick-headed, I have catched a bad cold, should have been working this weekend ...

Argus,
Sorry for your cold problems. Hope you are feeling better by now?

What I was saying was that the Via Rev 5 card IS my plug in USB card, not the USB ports on the mobo.

And when I right click the Via properties entry it shows as the PCI plug in card.
