Welcome screen (Windows Vista Home Preium)

I bought a new computer and brought home. Everything worked fine until I installed HP PhototSmart Essentials software along with a new C6280 Printer. Then when ever I went into Essentials it would lock up. I couldn't use that program. Talked with HP support for several messages. Ended up take computer back to BB and had computer rebooted. I had bought the book Windows Vista all-in-one Desk Reference for Dummies. I had a administrator account set up as me, and an account setup as Family. I did something like, I think ( Start, Searchbox, secpol.msc) and had it so it would go straight into the Family Account with out going through the welcome screen. Now after getting back after reboot, I can't seem to get it to not go to the welcome screen and making me log into my account or clicking to go into Family Account. I type in secpol.msc and it says it can't find. Am I remembering wrong or was there a different way I don't remember? Thanks

    Hi Rickluc...Welcome to the lounge!

I cleared the UAC check box and still got welcome screen. Maybe I didn't ask my question right. I thought I could restart my computer before (rebooting) and bypass the welcome screen and go directly into the Family account. I don't need to go into my Admin. account anymore since I got everything setup. My family can't change anything serious without the nagging screen wanting my password. Thanks

I tryed typing in the word netplwiz but it didn't bring up anything. I then went into my admin. account by logging in and went to user accounts in control panel. There was no option to turn off login. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

See if you can find it using Windows Explorer and going to C:windowssystem32netplwiz.exe.

If you have more than one account on a machine, then you can NOT turn OFF this option.

Go to "Help and Support", the type "Login" in the search pane. Now select "Store passwords for automatic logon" and follow the instructions.

I have admin. account and the one we use all the time which is Family account. I don't use admin. account except for the password in family account to change important stuff. Any suggestions? So when I restart the computer I would like it mto go straightr to Family account without Welcome Screen. Thanks

This what is how it works, and I believe that you must be in AN with admin privileges to make these settings.

I normally don't recommend anyone bypass the logon procedure from a security standpoint, but there are times when an auto-logon makes people happy. Here is how to enable Auto-Logon for Vista:

    1. Click the Start button, type 'netplwiz' and hit enter or click that name on the Start menu.

    2. In the GUI window that comes up uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer' box, then click 'Apply'

    3. In the new dialog box that opens type the name of the account you want to auto-logon by default. If the account is not normally passworded then leave the password blank, if the account is passworded then enter the password where indicated. Click OK your way out of both dialogs.

The account must already exist before you do this. I do not recommend that you create accounts without passwords. I do not recommend that you auto-logon your 'Administrator' account, use another account name with some admin privileges if you need to. Use this at your own risk, I do not accept any responsibility for anything that happens as a result of you using this.

If someone hacks your computer as a result of you following these instructions, I don't want to hear a word about "DaveA said to do this so its his fault"

Re: Welcome screen (Windows Vista Home Preium)

When I click Start and then the Search for files and folders it brings up screen that says search results in indexed locations, and I type in the line to right of that the following, I type in (net) it shows a lot of old Windows Mail messages. When I type in more letters (netpl) I see only one Windows Mail message. If I finish typing (netplwiz) I see only the one Windows Mail message. Am I using the search for files and folders correctly? I don't see the GUI, whats that stand for?, window to uncheck "Users etc. Thanks

Click Start and type in the "Start Search" box at the bottom of the Start menu. Do NOT select Search

Thanks, I have my start button set to Classic start menu. So I clicked on Run and typed in netplwiz and that worked. So if i go ahead and do this, and decide I don't like it is this move reversible? Thanks
