    CELL FORMAT (2003)

Is there a way to customize formatting so the color fill of a cell or a group of cells changes when selected? For example, a cell changes it's color fill when I select it then switches back to it's original color fill once I select a different cell?

    Thank you.

Excel already does that automatically, doesn't it? There is a thick border around the selection, and all cells except the active cell within the selection have a blue-gray background.

Yes it does. However, it only changes the border. I wanted to change the backgroud of the cell. Can this be done?

But Excel *does* change the background color - see for example Jan's Excel Intro: Select Range.

It might be possible to change the background color using a combination of conditional formatting and VBA, but it would slow down Excel tremendously.
And if you used the Worksheet_SelectionChange event, it would be difficult to restore the original formatting when moving to another cell.

I'm sorry for the confusion. Excel does change the color if you select a cell or a select all cells. What I really wanted to do is for excel to change the color of the cell if i click the cell.

I don't think that is a good idea. You'd need code in the Worksheet_SelectionChange event, and it would be difficult to guarantee that the original formatting is restored in all circumstances. Moreover, running such code disables the Undo feature in Excel.
