    picture files (excel)

Can you insert a jpg file directly into a cell? I can insert pictures/clip art onto worksheet, but not directly into a cell.. I've heard it's possible. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

As far as I know, pictures always float in a graphics layer above the worksheet, you cannot insert a picture in a cell.

You can, however, specify that a picture moves and sizes with cells (in the Properties tab of the Format | Picture dialog). If you then make the picture cover a cell exactly (by holding down Alt while moving and resizing it, so that the borders align exactly to the cell borders), it is as if the picture is part of the cell. If you move a range of cells containing that cell, the picture will move with it.

Another approach you could take is illustrated in this post. Its an interesting way of adding pictures to comments that are linked to a cell.
