Finer points of searching with Windows Explorer (Windows XP - PS2)

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

Is there a way to extract the results of a search using the search function in Windows Explorer? Say maybe to MS-Excel for sorting and manipulations?

Also say I am looking for music files, and I have multiple extensions, MP3, or M4A, or what have you. Is there a way to string these extensions so that we can search for them all, say something like .m* or something more accurate.

    Thanks for any help.

Don't know about your first question.

On the 2nd question, you can put multiple filespecs in the "All of part of the filename" box, separated by semi-colons. For example:

    <pre>*.mp3;*.m4a</pre>

    Hi Rodly

All suggestions are welcome in answer to Lounge questions... except for flaming and the like. Software solutions are also welcome. The only limitation here is that blatant plugs for (say, your own) commercial products is not generally acceptable. If you think your software solution might be relevant to other things, you might consider posting it in Software Finds and Wants with a reference to that post in this thread e.g. See <!t>[Post 123456]<!/t>

    Hi Wassim

I've become quite attached to Locate32 recently. It can save the results of searches to delimited text files, with a choice of which properties (Explorer columns) are included. I wish it also had a copy results to clipboard function... but alas not.

Thanks Alan, I shall take your advice in the future. In the mean time, if the OP googles for "Agent Ransack" I think he will find this free lite version of
"Filelocator Pro" a real handy piece of software, easy to install and operate. I drop search results into my flat file database MSWorks.
It will bring up sub sets of my 300,000 file postage stamp base in seconds, it will look inside Word docs for strings, but I am not sure if it will look inside zip files.

<img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> I've used Agent Ransack for years. It has some nice features and is self-contained/ portable for USB stick etc.

So its a semicolon vs. a comma. I shall try this.

I tried to make a screen shot and then OCR this image, but this is way too much work. I just need the path and file name columns, and Windows Explorer should have this export function.

OK we have to live with these limitations.

    Thanks again.

First welcome to the Lounge I am sure you are going to love it here.
Second, if we did not have what you call newbies here the Lounge will not grow and become better.
Third with all due respect to all, experts can't know everything, so a newbie is always welcome because they bring fresh information.

I would suggest that you check out the Help section so that you can add hot links to the software you refer to. This is so helpful.

Great to have you in the Lounge and start posting <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

    Cordially

See the Quick Guide, or the 1-Click TagPanel, or even <!post=this StarPost,438749>this StarPost<!/post> for guidance on posting live links in The Lounge.

I didn't want to edit your post since I'm coming into the discussion so late, but I think this is the software you mentioned: Agent Ransack - home.

Adding to what Alan said, it's QUITE acceptable to post a link to a software solution, especially in answer to another Lounger's question or search.

Cheers, Big Al, Wassim. Yep I have to practice inserting a link, thanks to Big Al I, can confirm Agent Ransack does not look in zip files, but the full program does.
It's good to see the Lounge Lizard exercising this morning, I felt he was drinking too much yesterday afternoon.

Now that you mention it, a comma will also work.
