    No Security Option (Excel 2000)

I have macros that I have developed and use frequently. Since I re-installed Excel it has started asking to have approval to enable my macros. I went to help and it says to set the security level by TOOLS>MACROS>Security. However when I followed those instructions I do not see any security option.

    Can anybody help me?
Will that solution also get me to where I apply a signature for security?

Re: No Security Option (Excel 2000)

Select Tools | Macro | Security... in Excel itself, not in the Visual Basic Editor.
If you don't see the Macro item, click the downward arrow at the bottom of the Tools menu to make it display all items.
You should see the dialog below.
Although setting macro security to Low would suppress all macro warnings, this is not recommended. It's better to set it to Medium.

If you want to apply a digital signature, you must first get one. Official ones can be obtained from for example Thawte and are expensive. You can create a digital certificate for your personal use by using the SelfCert.exe application that comes with Office (it's in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeSelfCert.exe)

The next step is to sign your macros. This is done in the Visual Basic Editor.
    Select Tools | Digital Signatures.
Click Choose... and follow the instructions.

When done, save and close the workbook.
Next time you open it, you'll be asked whether you want to trust the signature. If you do, the signature will be added to the list of trusted sources, and you won't be asked about macros in this workbook anty more.
You'll have to trust the signature only once.
And you will have to sign each workbook that contains macros once.

Re: No Security Option (Excel 2000)

    Thanks for responding.
I had tried to access Security from Excel not the VBA, and I have all menus items shown. The Macros item is there but when I select it the Security choice is not shown.
After your comment I did open VBA and intended to enter a signature. When I got there I note a project that I do not recognize.
The project was named NavNLU.xla, and it wanted a password to open it. I now wonder if I have already been hit with some type of virus

    Hi Halek

I googled NavNLU.xla and got only 1 result that I could not fully open but it seemed to suggest that this is an ActiveX control?

    Rightclick the menu, choose Customize
Right-Click the tools menu and select Reset. Close the customisation box and now access tools, macro, security.

NB: xla's -if installed- will not cause the enable macros dialog to appear.

Re: No Security Option (Excel 2000)

Thanks for your suggestion, that got the Security option back.
I realize now however, that your fix removed other modifications that I had made to the toolbars.
Is there a way to change only the Tools options without having to redo all the other changes that I made?

Re: No Security Option (Excel 2000)

You can only reset the menu bar as a whole, not individual menus such as Tools.

But in many cases it is possible to restore a missing menu option without resorting to a complete reset:
    - Select Tools | Customize...
    - Activate the Commands tab.
    - Select the appropriate category in the list on the left hand side (here: Tools).
    - Select the appropriate command in the list on the right hand side (here: Security...)
    - Drag the command to the appropriate place (or another place if you prefer).
    - Close the Customize dialog when done.

AFAIK you can reset just ONE part of a menubar by rightcliking on the item you want to reset and then selecting reset.

Re: No Security Option (Excel 2000)

    Thanks again Hans & Jan!
Hans' approach worked, so I now have a "Security" choice on my Menu bar.
I could not however get the right click Tools to work.

To reset the Tools menu, you should first select Tools | Customize, then right-click the Tools menu and select Reset from the popup menu.
