    Word - Hyphen (2003 Dutch)

    Good afternoon,

Can anybody tell me why my hyphens won't be replaced by a normal longer hyphen if I tell Word to do so.
    I've enabled this option through:
    Extra,
    Autocorrection options
    tab AutoLayout during typing
4th option at replace while typing: hyphens (--) (I don't know the correct english word) by normal hyphens (-)

I'm very surprised that the option I selected doesn't work, the others dó work even if I change them and change them back again.

I've offerd the user the work-around of defining his own autocorrectionobject, but he'll lose that if we roll out new images...

I hope somebody will recognise this problem and can help me.

    Many thanks in advance!

One thing I can mention is that if you do not type a space in front of the hyphen, it will not convert into an endash. (A long hyphen is called an endash).

For example: The cat -a black one- walked under the ladder. The first hyphen (since it is preceded by a space will convert), but the second one (without a leading space) will not.
    Regards,

I usually insert dashes manually. You can use this as an alternative method

long "en" dash Alt+0150 (on the numeric keypad)

longer "em" dash Alt+0151 (on the numeric keypad)

And, as always in Word, there are other keystrokes to achieve the same results.

    En dash is <Ctrl> <number-pad-hyphen-key>
    Em dash is <Ctrl> <Alt> <number-pad-hyphen-key> (or <Alt> <Ctrl> <number-pad-hyphen-key>)

Yes and for those who do not like to have the "Num Lock" on there's yet another way. > Insert >Symbol, (with Font set to Normal Text) scroll to and click on the En sign then > Shortcut Key. then in "Press new shortcut key" enter Alt + [ then "Assign". Repeat the action for the Em sign but adding the Shift key. e.g. Alt + Shift + [ (which changes to { ). Great keyboard shortcuts. Dave.

The keyboard shortcuts mentioned by Pingdat work whether NumLock is on or off, so there us no need to create extra keyboard shortcuts.
Those mentioned by JScher2000 only work if NumLock is on.

Thanks Hans, yet one more of the myriad ways to something in Microsoft, as for the term Pingdat this is the first time I had even heard of it. Is it the door to a whole lot of other shortcuts or tricks? Dave.

SORRY this thread definitely got derailed from me miss-reading a post. The moral of the story from numerous angles, is to thoroughly read a post before deciding to respond to it and then before clicking the "Post it" tab when one does. Dave.

Pingdat: just an easy-to-type and fun-to-say name I made up. Rhymes with Dingbat. Makes me smile.
