Opening attachments (XP Professional)

I have seen the same behavior in FF2+ with PKZip - not sure why, but if I click on the inactive (grayed out) OK, after a millisecond it becomes available, and then I can open the Attachment.

I don't know how to change the OK/Cancel default, and I wouldn't for security reasons.

When viewing any post with an attachment, if I want to open - as opposed to save it - as will be seen from the attached screen shot, the OK tab is grayed out. Can this, like that of the "Cancel" tab be tweaked so as to be available by default please? Thanks. Dave.

Well I'm not exactly sure of this either but I don't think you can OPEN a zip file in the browser. Whenever I click on a zip (or exe file for that matter) the save option automatically comes up. I've never tried to find out why, so maybe somenoe else can enlighten us.

What I don't know about, Tony, and always assumed it was a state of doing business, is that if I RIGHT-CLICK on a ZIP or EXE file I do not get any option to OPEN the file. This attachment shows what I get. I figured it was a condition of use that ZIP or EXE files are expected to be saved to one's hard drive, not opened in the browser. Even if I select Open in a New Tab or Window, the SAVE AS dialogue comes up next.

A security feature of Firefox prevents executables from being opened and they must be saved instead.

Thank you one and all for your responses, I opened the hyperlink mentioned by Tony but I'm afraid it mentions stuff out of my depth. I did however click the grayed out tab as someone indicated and found too that in the twinkling of an eye it responded as mentioned, became in focus. When I typed the original thread then clicked the "Post" tab instantly the thought came to me that this sometimes happens even if the attachment is NOT zipped so that seems to corroborate the point made about Firefox's security. . I must say that in the past by trial and error, after clicking on various tabs at random the Grayed out tab has become responsive but I can't remember what I did so I shall have to be more observant in future. I get the same behavior as Silver Fox, but if I click on the dialog, the OK button becomes active. This may be specifically related to PKZip and FF.

I've noticed there often is a variable time delay before the OK button becomes active. This might relate to Firefox starting to download the file in the background. When downloads slow, it sometimes is caused by the download history becoming too large or the download history file becoming corrupted. The download history can be cleared completely using the Clean Up button in the Downloads dialog (Ctrl+J).

FF Downloads history was pretty clean, only one old item in the cache.

But I noticed something else; if I Cancel the download in the FF D/L window, but return later to the same item, the OK button becomes active instantly.
