History (IE7)

In the previous version of IE, there was a 'History' button, which when clicked opened a LH pane which showed a list of web pages browsed that day, the previous day, the previous week etc. In IE7, there doesn't appear to be a similar button - the only reference to History I can find in the Help files just shows a history of Favourites visited. Is this functionality still available in IE7 and how do I get to see it?

On the IE 7 bar, there is a STAR icon on the left side ( usually)
If you click on the star it should give you a "dropdown with a History icon.

Well - that's what I thought too, but all it shows me is a list of my Favourites I have visited. Useless.

    Re: History (IE7)

You mean it doesn't show a history of used files on "My computer" in the place Bob referred to? Or anything, but when the visited page is on your list of Favourites, then it shows in History?

    Re: History (IE7)

This is what I see when I click on the star. It's a list of image files I have recently used, not a list of the web pages recently visited, which is what I want to see.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 16-Dec-07 10:06. )
Is it possible that the browser is set to clear its history, leaving only the Windows Explorer history to display in that pane?

Added: Also, by analogy to Firefox, if the browser is set to store "0" days of history, then even in the same session you would not see any history listed.

(I will get around to installing IE7 one of these days. )

Have you set the History tab to your preferences?

Here's the untouched default setting for the number of days to store history.

    Re: History (IE7)

And here's a screenshot of my Preferences. As you can see, the only file showing is the screenshot for the previous post, but I weas browsing early this morning until about 1.00am, so there should be websites showing up for today.

    I wish I'd never installed IE7.

    Re: History (IE7)

Does IE retain any history if you keep browsing, or does it lose it all only after you have closed IE and re-opened it?

Have you any 'privacy' software installed that may be clearing your history? For example, ZoneAlarm can be set to clear your temp files (although I'm not exactly sure how often it would do this.)

    >>Does IE retain any history if you keep browsing, or does it lose it all only after you have closed IE and re-opened it?

It doesn't retain ANY history at all, even after visiting several websites, and without closing IE.

I do not have any privacy software installed. Zone Alarm did terrible things to my computer a few years ago during a time change to daylight saving and I've never trusted it again. Except for my antivirus, PC-cillin, nothing unusual is installed on this computer. It was completely reformatted only a few months ago, and I have very little software installed (e.g. no Office *gasp*), just the Adobe Creative Suite and not much else.

Perhaps it's time to try out one of the other browsers. I didn't realise how much I relied on the History until I couldn't get it.

I posted another question about an annoyance of IE7 a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't get rid of the 'Setting Preferences' screen.....wait!! I wonder if there was anything I did there that mucked up the History?? I can't remember now what the solution was, but it worked. I will have to check what I did and report back.

Leif - it was you who provided me with the answer, which was: "Does this Fixing the IE7 “runonce” problem article help?" and it did. Could something to do with the History have been affected by this?

    Re: History (IE7)

There may be a connection, but I've no idea what it could be!

Can you check with Windows Explorer what you have in:

Cocuments and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsHistory

(where username is the profile of the username you are logged in as)

You should see sites being added as you browse...

    Otherwise:
    What operating system?

I'm wondering if there may either be damage to your profile, or a permissions issue. Can you log in as another user to check if you get the same symptoms?

    Leif

Here is a screenshot in WE of the path you suggested. As you can see - there's no History folder. I am using Windows XP.

    Re: History (IE7)

Back again... I just checked under 'Default User' instead of my own username, and there IS a History folder, but with nothing in it. I visited a couple of websites before coming here, but they don't show up in this folder. But we seem to be getting warmer, in that there was no History folder under my username. No-one else uses this computer, and I don't have to 'login' as such.

You have suggested damage to my profile - this could be something to investigate further. Obviously the lack of a History folder is the reason I don't get to see any history of websites visited, but I'm sure it's not a simple matter of manually creating a folder, is it?

    Re: History (IE7)

As indicated by the icon, History is one of the those 'special' Windows folders. Instead of just creating the folder, try copying from the Default User to the your user.
