windows 200 sevice pack 3

Have been asked to help install new HP printer on computer running an UN-updated version of windows 2000. Printer should be compatable with W2K but installation stalls from cd because " error system should have Windows 2000 sevice pack 3". I think service pack 3 should still be available from Microsoft but the people who asked for my help only have 56k dial up. So my question is - can I download SP3 to a cd using my connection and then use this to update their machine? If so will the SP3 self extract or is there a special way of doing it? (i have suggested it's time to buy a new computer by the way but they are happy with their old one as it does all they want - just the basic letter writing and surfing etc). Thanks for any guidance on this.

Re: windows 200 sevice pack 3

Service Pack 4 (SP-4) for Windows 2000 supersedes SP-3, so installing SP-4 will fulfill printer driver requirements.

Download SP-4 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
(128 MB download), burn it to CD and install on the client computer.

I would strongly recommend also download and install

- Internet Explorer 6 SP-1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

- and Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

But, of course, you can limit your job to minimum requirements and install SP-3 for Windows 2000:

I'm afraid you have provided jaystarter1 with the wrong downloads Kaplin. jaystarter1 is looking for the service packs for *Windows 200* -

Rudi, perhaps you should limit your attempts at being funny to Scuttlebutt.

Re: windows 200 sevice pack 3

Ok my fault for not spotting the "typo" so let's call it W2K. But now I'm a bit confused as going to the links to get the downloads for both SP-3 and SP-4 a bit further down the page their are links for "express install for end users" which in the case of SP-4 is 589KB as oppossed to the 128MB. Which one do I want, all I want to do is update W2K on a single machine.

I'm not certain, but I think the 589 KB is the size of a small installer that, when downloaded and run, will download and install the SP-4 update automatically without prompting the user for settings.

Re: windows 200 sevice pack 3

I would go for the Express install. The full SP4 includes updates you may already have and is probably only worth downloading if you are likely to do a fresh re-install without any service packs. The actual size of the download will vary depending on what is needed, but will be less than the maximum 128MB quoted.

From Activewin.com:

The Express installation detects your system components and installs only the updates that are necessary for your computer. For example, files for Windows 2000 Professional will not be installed if your computer is running Windows 2000 Server. As a result, the number of files installed and the download times may vary depending whether you are using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server. This installation method is recommended for customers who want to reduce their download time.

Re: windows 200 sevice pack 3

Hi Leif,

Since the OP is starting with just a base W2K installation, I suspect the SP4 update will be close to the full 128Mb. Either way, I'd be inclined to download the lot & save to CD so as to avoid the download chore next time there's a reinstall.
Cheers,

agree, download the 128mb. the express version actulally downloads all of the files from the web whenever it is used, so you need internet.

and the sp4 rollup is out, so download it after u download the sp4! http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b-bf28b324c662
