I get a bit tired of editing your links to make them "live." Can you help ALL Loungers a little by takng time to post your links so that they're "hot" please?

Sorry. I seem to always forget to put the tags around the URLs, sigh.

Why can't this be done automatically like at many other sites????

Well, we're not like other sites for many reasons, and I for one and very glad about that!

Because we don't try to be like just any other site? It's no great hardship to make an address or link "click-able"!

To the TPTB posts above: Thanks for meaningless answers. Other sites do this for users because it IS a problem. Aren't computers supposed to do the grunt work for us? If other sites can do this, why can't WOPR????

Because it is run by unpaid volunteers who would rather spend their time responding to posts than trying to rewrite the very old and creaky software.

About the only way we could make the lounge look and feel like other sites would be to start again with new software, and that would lose all the things we know and love about the lounge, including the searchable archive of tremendously useful posts.

    Hey, snap out of it please <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Nobody claims that Woody's Lounge or its software is perfect as it is. But as others have pointed out, we're stuck with ancient software and we don't have the time or resources to rewrite it.
Despite all that, I think Woody's Lounge does a decent job helping people solve their problems. We hope that members pay a little consideration to others in return. Surely that is not too much to ask?

    Thank you for your understanding.

Creaky software aside, "manual" links also mean that it's safe & easy to include dodgy links in a post and know that anyone who wants to check them out has had a chance to read your warnings and must deliberately cut & paste to follow them.

"Other sites" make them "live" leading to possibly unintended actions, or you have to mangle the url so it isn't recognised as such, and is thus difficult to use.

btw Does the Lounge have an address to send rubber bands, band-aids, baling wire, etc to?

Look, I'm sorry. I'll try to remember to put the tags around the URL's.

I still don't see why this is such an issue. Why is it so critical for links to be clickable that a MOD has to go in and manually edit them? You can always cut and paste the link if you REALLY want to follow it. It won't kill you to do so. Furthermore, this is only an issue in IE. For those using FF, the extension at http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~jchien/code/ftu.html allows you to easily highlight and fetch any URL in a new tab or window.

As for all the apologies about old software, it's only going to get older. It was down for what, a month or so a while back? Things will only get worse. I think there is plenty of free forum software available. Yes, you have to incur a conversion but at least the job will be done. And btw: it seems that every other forum has search functionality also. Search is not something unique to WOPR software. Maybe it was 10 years ago but things have changed quite a bit since then.

    Re: Retunril - Virtual Windows

Why post a link if you don't expect people to follow it? It takes at most a couple of seconds for you to make a link live, which then saves everyone else the time and trouble of having to copy and paste it into the browser address bar. (and, believe it or not, the majority of people don't use Firefox, so it is an issue for them)
As for the software, we are well aware it will need to be addressed at some stage but that's a time and resource issue, and is obviously not going to happen for this.
All we are asking for is a small courtesy to others. Whether or not you choose to oblige is up to you.

    Re: Retunril - Virtual Windows

And I said I would try to remember to do so.

But to ensure that I (and others) don't create so many problems for you IE users, putting a plan in place to select and make the transition to new software seems like something that should be started now (actually, should have been started some time ago). Or do you wait until the forum is totally and completely broke do to some event and then react?

Sort of reminds me of the company I am currently working for - why do anything now that can be put off to some undetermined time in the future?

    Re: Retunril - Virtual Windows

I am aware that you said that - I was responding to your second paragraph.

Also, as I said, we are not going to rewrite the Lounge software just so that a few people are saved a keystroke or mouse click here and there. We all have jobs and lives that require our time too.
