New laptop with Vista sharing issue

    Hi to all!

I've got a nice new Vaio laptop with Vista Business and I can't get it to allow my other computers in for file sharing. It can see all the other computers on the network, and they can see it. I just can't get into C-drive on the new laptop from other computers. I can get into the files on the other computers from the laptop though.

What is weird is that even though I can't get into C drive, I can get into the the USERS and PUBLIC folders on the laptop from my desktop computer though.

Windows firewall on the new laptop is turned OFF while I'm working on this.

I have the drive name set at "C".

Under C, PROPERTIES, SHARING I have C-drive set to SHARED.
Under ADVANCED SHARING from that window I have SHARE THIS FOLDER checked.
Under PERMISSIONS from that window I have PERMISSIONS FOR EVERYONE checked to ALLOW in all rows.

Under C, PROPERTIES, SECURITY I have ALLOW checked for all authenticated users (with the exception of SPECIAL PERMISSIONS which has no check for either ALLOW or DENY.
There are other options under ADVANCED from the SECURITY window but I have made no changes there from the default setup.

So...........that's what I've done and it seems to me that should be all that is needed. However, when I try to map the laptop drive from my desktop computer I get "Drive is not accessible. Access is denied." message.

    Any help ???

    Thanks,
    BH

In CONTROL PANEL, NETWORKS AND SHARING, I have all SHARING AND DISCOVERY options ON except for PASSWORD.

How are your other PCs authenticating? Whatever user accounts are trying to connect to the Vista PC must also exist on the Vista PC to pass authentication.

    Joe,

I should have mentioned the other PCs are XP Home units. Is AUTHENTICATION an issue? My user account on my desktop is: B.H. Davis. It is the same on the laptop.

Also, I have USER ACCOUNT CONTROL turned OFF on the laptop while I try to get this working.

The Sony machines come with a 90 day Norton's Suite, which has a built in firewall. Have you removed Norton's or set the settings within it to allow the wanted actions?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yeah........uninstalled the Norton 90 day suite. Put on Norton Antivirus alone. Tried turning it off but that didn't help.

What firewal(s) and settings do you have on the other machines?
Can you access any of the other machines from any of them?

Re: New laptop with Vista sharing issue

    Dave,

Complete interaction between both the other computers on the network........except for Program Files, Windows and Docs and Settings folders (pain in the..........). The new Sony can access them completely....they just can't access it beyond the 2 folders I mentioned.

The firewall on the laptop is Windows Firewall and it is off while I'm trying to establish connection.

What is weird that I should mention is that friggin Norton Antivirus says it has an active firewall in the features ON/Off window but there is no firewall in Norton Antivirus. I discussed this with their live chat people and they said that even though it say a firewall is engaged it is not if Windows Firewall is off. I've about had it with Norton.........join the club I guess.

If I have all the Vista settings adjusted correctly (and no one as yet has suggested anything to alter) then I guess the next step would be to uninstall Norton Antivirus and see what happens.

    Thanks,
    BH

See if the post from redondo77 at Vista and XP computers can't see each other even though they're on the same network - TechNet Forums helps. There are many other threads with various suggestions at Search Results.

Re: New laptop with Vista sharing issue

I have Stopped using Norton's and have never liked McAfee.

On my Vista Sony laptop I am using MS OneCare and it does a fine job. No networking issues. The wife is using Avast and Free ZoneAlarm on her Vista Sony laptop, with NO networking issues. On our XP Sony desktops we are using FProtect for a AV and the free ZoneAlarm for a firewall. No networking issues.

We have shared printers on the XP machines which all machines can access and use. We have no problems in sharing files across the network. Beware that sharing of the "User" files is normally not allowed in Vista and you will need to move or copy your user files to the Public" folder.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: New laptop with Vista sharing issue

Did you solve this? I was coming to the forum with exactly the same problem and saw this thread. I bought my wife a new Vista home premium machine and added it to my home network with a wired router. I can access all three XP computers from the Vista computer. But I get the access denied when trying to access the Vista machine from the others. I turned on all sharing.I set sharing for both partitions, all folders I wish to share, and the printer. One more note to add to your problem is in network places, looked at from an XP machine, the Vista machine is listed under workgroup rather than the name of my network. On the Vista computer, the network box shows it connected to my home network name. I uninstalled Norton and turned off the windows firewall. There is no firewall running on any of the computers. All that is running on any of the computers is AVG Free anti virus. I can access the public folder on the Vista machine from the other computers. But I cannot print or access any other folders from the XP computers. I'll go search existing threads, but I sure would appreciate any help you guys could give me. Again.

Addition: I can now print to the printer on the Vista computer from the XP computers. So the issue now is accessing the folders on the Vista computer from the XP computers. I now managed to put the Vista computer on the same workgroup as all the other computers. I found the place to change that. But I still can only access the public folder on the Vista from the XP's.

Re: New laptop with Vista sharing issue

No, I kind of gave up on it. It 's not something I need to do very often so I figured it wasn't worth putting any more effort into. Perhaps after a service pack just for kicks when the first one comes out.........or 6 months or so after it comes out as I'm not inclined to take a risk of installing that that until it's been proven.

Re: New laptop with Vista sharing issue

I think I got it. I was doing the sharing incorrectly. I had to choose a folder and then choose who to share it with. I chose "everyone," set that to co-owner, and now those folders can be accessed from the XP computers. I haven't managed to share an entire partition, but I'll work on it.
