# Thread: MAX plus ???? (XP)

1. ## MAX plus ???? (XP)

Have profits for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter in row 12. Want a formula in another cell to look at all four quarter profit figures, pick out the largest, and return which quarter had the best profit - 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter not the actual amount of the profit.

Know it can be done - just can't figure it out - again.

Let's say the data are in A1212.
The formula =MAX(A1212) returns the highest value. Let's call this H.
The formula =MATCH(H,A1212,0) returns the index (1, 2, 3 or 4) where this highest value can be found.
Combining the formulas, you get

=MATCH(MAX(A1212),A1212,0)

Hi Aunt Linda

Assume Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 are in B11:E11

Put your values below in row 12 in B12:E12

In F12 type:

=INDEX(B11:E11,MATCH(MAX(B12:E12),B12:E12,0))

Thanks, Jerry. Works perfectly.

You got way ahead of my brain, Hans. You give me waaaaaaaaay too much credit for understanding math! Thanks, though - I need the encouragement . . hahaha!

Happy Holidays to you
