Format Painter in Word 2007 (Word 2007)

Here's a simple yet exasperating problem. I am working on getting used to Office 2007, and I have a problem with the format painter. It still says that a double-click will allow multiple changes in a document, yet after highlighting my text I want to use as a source, then double-clicking on the format painter, I am only allowed to paint the formatting once, then the format painter option turns itself off not allowing me to paint formatting elsewhere without starting the process again.

Keeping all opinions of Office 2007 to myself, (but wonder if I will ever get used to it without using the Flash Interactives as a crutch)...

Thanks for any help on the Format Painter Issue...

Try using Control-Shift-C to copy the format and Control-Shift-V to paste it, this has the advantage that you can do all sorts of other things (including normal copy and paste) in between, and you can do as many Control-Shift-Vs as you want.

Stuart,

Thanks for the shortcut, though I was aware of it...I was just curious why 2007's format painter "says" it will do multiple formatting with the double-click like previous versions, yet it shuts off after the first use.

From a quick Google search, it appears to work for some, and not for others...
You could try Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word,197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word<!/post>, most of which applies to Word 2007 too.
Or you could use Ctrl+Shift+C to copy formatting to the clipboard, and Ctrl+Shift+V to apply the formatting to selected text. This can be repeated.

Yes, I see some have had trouble with Format Painter in 2003, but haven't heard anything about it not working in 2007. Maybe we'll run across the reason in concrete form at some point before I start teaching this in February. I really hate saying, "I'm not sure...it's Word's personality shining through, but here is a 'work around'...", because trust me, when they find something doesn't work, they want an answer...

Here's to eventually learning why...am sure it will turn up in time. Thanks everyone!

Just a thought: but are you having double click problems with the mouse elsewhere? It may be that you are clicking the format painter too quickly (or not quickly enough) and you are just getting one instance of it. Have a look at your mouse set up and check the double-click speed.

Barbara,

Thanks for the thought, but in this case, not a click problem. I have been teaching Microsoft Office for 13 years and have no click problems. Whoops!
Bambara (Peter) I am sorry I called you Barbara...wasn't paying too much attention to the username...my bad.
Forgive me!

Don't give it another thought, NMP.

If Barbara was the worst thing I'd ever been called in my life I'd be a very happy <img src=/S/aussie.gif border=0 alt=aussie width=21 height=22> . Besides, I've known some very nice <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23> Barbara's in my life

Best wishes.
