Remove Tabs in New Dialog box (2000)

How do you remove tabs for MS out of the box templates from the New Dialog Box so there is more room for user created tabs?

This varied depending on the OS and whether you have user profiles set up on the machine but using Windows Explorer navigate to c:windowsapplication datamicrosofttemplates. Each of the tabs relates to a subfolder. The location can vary as I mentioned and an alternative location can be c:windowsprofilesname of profileapplication datatemplates.

Delete the folders that you don't want and bobs your aunty.

This was true in 97 but not true for the three different 2000 computers I looked at. All my user templates are located there but Bill's junk seems to be hidden elsewhere.

Sam,

You need to go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to do this.
I've read descriptions for doing this but don't have them at hand.
Just a quick trial and error though indicates the steps are:

Select Microsoft Office (your version) in Add/Remove Programs.
Click on the Change button.
Click on Add or Remove Features.
Click on the plus symbol next to Microsoft Word for Windows to expand it.
Click on the plus symbol next to Wizards and Templates to expand it.
You will see a number of categories such as Letters, Memos etc.
Click on the box symbol just to the left of any of these category names.
Click on the "X Not Available" option.
Then click on the "Update Now" button at the bottom right of the dialog.
Not sure but you may need to close and restart Word before the changes take effect.

I didn't see the templates in there either, but speaking of hidden junk, there were over 2400 shortcuts in the folder c:windowsapplication datamicrosoftofficerecent dating back about 12 months. That's about 200 files per month. I need a vacation.

I've found your instructions to be accurate and succinct. I would like to add them to my Templates Basics page with your permission. They would include a link back to this thread and Woody's Lounge.

Gary and Charles,

Thank you both very much for posting these succinct instructions for eliminating those unwanted tabs from the New dialogue. What a pleasure it is to get back to an uncluttered dialogue!
