Office 97 and Win2000 (Various)

I am running Office 97 on Win2000. Whenever I open an existing office document by doublie clicking on in in Explorer, or off the Documents menu, the correct part of Office starts, loads the document, then throws a dialog box saying that it cannot open the same document twice.
I have put "various" in the version/sr box because I have tried applying all the O97 and W2K service packs, and none of them have changed this behaviour.
Oh - just to confuse matters I have Outlook 2000 on the system as well.

Does anyone else see this behaviour? Is there a fix?

Exactly the same problem appears on some of my colleague's machines, some desktop, some laptop.

You haven't got single-click to act like double-click in your mouse set-up, by any chance?

No, checked that one. It happens however the document is launched, except using File Open in and Office program. It even happens when opening an attachment from email.

Sounds like it may be a file association thing then.
From Explorer:
Tools | Folder Options | File Types
find the DOC extension and click Advanced
Below is what I have (Office10 = XP) - you could always try deleting the association, double-click a .doc and when it asks what program to use, select Word and 'always use this program'.

Thanks - checked the settings and they looked the same. I tried deleting the association, and re-creating it. Same problem.

Do the troublesome documents use a common template (other than Normal.dot)?

Do you have any Open events or AutoOpen code in any global templates that might not be compatible with opening through Explorer?

What virus scanner do you use?

Does this not happen on other versions of Windows?

I don't think that they use a common template other than normal.dot - even that is not common between all the office components is it? This happens in Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

No Open events or similar. If I create a new blank document in Excel, save it to disk, close Excel and then open the document from explorer, the error comes up (See below)

I don't have any other versions of Windows available here. The whole company is on W2K, O97 and Outlook 2000.

Virus scanner is McAfee 5.1 VShield.

Excel: Tools | Options | General
Do you have anything listed in your Alternate Startup location?

Just a thought... maybe it's to do with your Win2K permissions. In Excel, go to Tools / Add-Ins and see if the Autosave add-in is marked. If so, unmark it, exit Excel and see if you still have a problem.

Excel isn't my strong suit, but it could be that your user rights are limited in the folder where autosaves are stored.

Thanks for the thought. However, Autosave is not checked, and my user ID is set up with Admin privs on this machine. This is also a problem with all other Office 97 products on this machine.

It isn't just my PC either, the 4 other people in the room I am in suffer the same. About 50/50 Desktop and Laptop, not that it should make any difference.

Well, it was a thought. I plugged in the exact language of the error message and the only thing I could find in the KB was Article Q184159.

You don't mention IE as being any part of this issue though, so I doubt it works. I'm plumb out of ideas. Sorry

For what it is worth, I am using IE 5.00.3315.1000, stock W2K as far as I know.
Is there a relevant update for IE that I should have?
Or perhaps a better question is:
Which is the latest update that I should have?

That is an IE5.0 version. Current stable IE is IE5.5 and IE6 is in beta.

Just in case, I downloaded and installed IE5.5 SP2, no difference.
