Windows XP shutdown (Windows XP Home SP2)

I just installed Win XP Home on a new hard drive. When I attempt to "shut down", the computer restarts instead. All windows updates are current. Any ideas why?

Hi there, welcome to the Lounge.

There are various reasons for this and it is not always the Windows updates but the Device Drivers, so my first guess is to go to your device drivers websites and get some updates as well. If you have done this then:

    1) Start | Control Panel | Settings | System
    2) Click Advanced | System And Recovery | Settings.

    In the System Failure section,

    3) Clear the Automatically Restart check box
    4) Click OK.
    While you are there though

    5) Click the Error Reporting button near the bottom right and check Disable Error Reporting.
    6) Check the box next to "But notify me when critical errors occur." Click OK twice

This latter section is a work around but worth a try

    Take a look at KB311806.
