Cursor in Word has changed to a full stop (2003)

For some odd reason the cursor in Word has changed to a full stop, Is there any way this can be changed to a vertical line instead?

Some comments are made to get it back to normal, but scanning through the thread gives no indication why this behaviour is there?!
