iPod Touch; The best device ever.

    Guys,

    I'm not one to sell something without a contract, but I just received a shiney new iPod Touch (8GB) for christmas, and this thing blows me away. I can surf the web from any wireless access point, and even the lounge renders extremely well. Gloating aside, I do have a question;

There is a process called 'Jailbreaking' that I don't know much about. It seems to allow you to use third-party applications within the Ipod, without hindering the apple-ready software installed on it. My question is, has anyone tried to 'Jailbreak' their iPod Touch? Results in other boards online are mixed, prompting me to ask an expert here...

That inquiry aside, the device is truely remarkable, and is going to spawn change the web over. Already, sites are cropping that are iPhone/Touch friendly, allowing them to be viewed in the native resolution. (As a designer, my charter will be to learn how to develop these sites, and that soon...)

The only problem I have had so far is that the native version of Safari does not support Flash, however I am confident that problem will be solved with an update in the future.

Here's a picture of mine; I've placed a bic pen in the foreground for scale reference. It's remarkably small. If you haven't already, stop by your Apple Store and play around with one.

    They're simply amazing.

    Kel,

I assume you've seen Apple's developer's site here: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/devcenter/. Although it says iPhone - it's for the iTouch as well. Also many applications for iPhone/iTouch here: http://www.apple.com/webapps/

Haven't used / seen jailbreak - but it seems that apple has opened the two to external developers (as above) - not sure it's still necessary.

I must admit Kel, when I first saw your post I raised an eyebrow! Something so new and sssooo shiny should not be mucked about with until it has its replacement or upgraded version sitting next to it.

I updated the Bootstrap and Firmware on my old Ipaq yesterday and although I have a newer model, the sweat was certainly dripping off my hairy brow when I was doing it.

I went off to research the various sites that are on the interweb thingy and there appeared to be two types of people doing this: The capably incompetent and the incapably competent. I should wait a couple of months until there is a "guaranteed" hack (can I use that word?) to settle this...anyway my [2cent] as usual

I've had the iphone since day 1. I was the first one on line at my AT&T store. It is the best personal electronic device ever made. I have a fully jailbroken iphone and ts SWEET!

If you didn't upgrade to 1.1.3 yet, let me know, I'll send you the site to get the install.app.

Re: iPod Touch; The best device ever.

    Kel--

I'm an Itouch fan, a Mac User wannabe because I love my friends' Imacs and Mac Book Pros, and a long time Windoz hobbyist. I haven't jail broken my Touch, but friends who do Apple development are fond of this site: http://www.ziphone.org/ and this <A target="_blank" HREF="http:// blog www.tuaw.com/2008/03/30/ziphone-3-0-released/
>http:// blog www.tuaw.com/2008/03/30/ziphone-3-0-released/
     .

I have been able though to make Iphone work a bit like (admittedly not as easy to read because of screen size but with the same ease as a web page) the Amazon Kindle or the Sony Ebook. I used http://www.foldershare.com downloading it to my PC (it may work with a Mac) and then was able to log into that site using my Itouch. Then I clicked Remote Device>and could see the "Computer" configuration on Vista or My Computer on XP. I clicked on my external hard drive where all folders are dragged and dropped and anything else I want to back up in addition to having used Acronis 11 and Vista's backup. I like the wysiwyg of not compressing on the external HD. I have a number of ebooks as htmls or .pdfs and I am able to open the folders and read them just fine on the Itouch and just the idea I can access my external HD of my desktop on my Itouch is interesting by hitting foldershare with Safari on the Touch.

Keep your eyes out for what will be released soon as part of https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/Welcome.aspx because it works on Macs and PCs (MSFT is having developers build in Mac applications) and they are about to release the ability to add in remote wireless devices.

For context of Mesh which is one of Ray Ozzie's babys--although many of its components pend definition from MSFT, see this article by Mary Jo Foley. I am waiting to use the Touch with Mesh until they release the capability of adding wireless portable devices like Windows Mobile devices and the Iphone/Itouch.
