Scanner problem. (XP Home edition Ver 5.1 SP2)

I'm new to this site. Can anybody help?
    Scanner problem. Epson DX5000.
I have run into a problem launching the scanner program for my All in one scanner/printer Epson Stylus DX5000. It has worked fine in the past. I am using Windows XP Home.
When starting the program, (Start, Programs, Epson scan), the icon on the taskbar appears, then the pop-up window on the desktop appears for a short time and then disappears. Then the taskbar icon disappears.
If I go into Scanners & Cameras via Control Panel, the scanner is listed OK. Requesting properties shows a pop-up window which says "The scanner or camera is in use. Please try again later". I have no problem printing documents. I have been through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the suite of progs supplied with the scanner/printer.
My problems all started when I began to experiment with the various video capture programs available, ie Windows Movie Maker, Power Director, NTI Video Maker, to see which I felt worked the best. I am using a Belkin USB Videobus 2 as the capture hardware. I also do not think I have the facility to roll back to an earlier time now using System Restore.
However, if I switch to "Guest User", and this is a facility I have only just enabled in order to narrow the problem down ( as recommended by a work colleague), I can open the Epson scan program no problem and it works fine. Reverting back to normal user and the problem reappears. Has anybody got any ideas or areas where I can look? This is frustrating me somewhat. Thanks, Richie.

    Richard,

Why do you not think you have the facility to use System Restore?
Have you tried to use SR or doesn't it have an early enough restore point date?

Have you checked to see that the printer's queue is empty ?? ......that the Epson is set as the default printer in that profile ?? ....that the Epson is set as the default screen capture program (at least temporarily for troubleshooting purposes) ??

This is from left-field since I don't have your hardware. But I did have a problem with my Canon scanner giving me messages that the scanner couldn't be found and such. If I would reboot, all would be well for awhile, but then it would happen again. It was suggested that I turn OFF the power saver in Device Manager and since that time I've had no problems with the Canon. I don't think it would hurt your system performance to give this a try. If you show more than one root hub, be sure you repeat the turn off for all instances. See attached example.

    Thanks for your input guys.
Bob, (Viking 33), My System Restore does not seem to go back far enough. (Probably been deleted during clean up operation).
Doc, Didn't quite understand your reference to.....that the Epson is set as the default screen capture program (at least temporarily for troubleshooting purposes) ?? How do I do this ?
BigAl, There were 4 USBs listed. I unchecked the power option on them all, rebooted etc. No effect.
Further notes: I've removed another program that I thought may have affected things - Adobe Photoshop Album. This had been loaded fairly recently.
I am inclined to think that there is still something fundamental about this. The fact that I can use the printer no problem but the scanner won't fire up. If I switch to a Guest User, the scanner works fine. I think it's telling me that another program has taken command of the scanner permanently. But how do I find out which ?
Looking forward to hearing from you again. Thanks, Richie.
