Seek free paint program.

Has anyone seen a free paint program that will offer scaleable dots? My "Paint" program in 98se offered this, but the latest MSpaint is niggardly in this respect, I require it for engineering perforations in postage stamps. Adobe is too bulky to load each time, we need just a light application. Thanks.

Also, you might want to look at Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing. I don't know if it will do what you need.

Thank you both very much gentlemen, I used Paint.NET, for no other reason that I already had downloaded it, but not installed it. The paintbrush (dot) has scaleable sizes, so it works fine. Hard to believe mspaint does not offer this. Cheers. Rod.

Just being nosey here

I see you attached an image to the original post in this thread, are you trying to "clean off" the stamp hinge off the back for display, like below.

I use a clone tool and a marquee tool

Wow! impressive! no I wasn't Jerry, I usually soak the stamps after to remove all gunk and re scan. What I would have on my "wish" list, is to be able to isolate
the puncture marks as black dots on a plain white background square , for use in a catalogue. Any advice ?

Re: Seek free paint program.

Well below is a quick hash up of how I did that, it is a bit sneaky but with a bit of work it could be improved. I use Macromedia/Adobe Fireworks but the method would be the same for any other application.

1) Inverse the colouring i.e. Make it negative black=white and vice-versa
2) Highlight the darker area, you may have to adapt the gain to gather "the noise"
3) Once Selected, delete this area
4) Inverse select so that now the dots selected
5) Now select an airbrush tool, making it spray black paint and brush over the dots until they are all black
6) Deseslect everything
7) Make the background white

Sounds complex but once you have done it a couple of times, it will be a sinch

Try the Lounge's favourite tool Irfanview to do this.

Very nice indeed Sir! I have Adobe, so I'll kick some tyres. Thanks for your time / detailed explanation. Rod.

Jerry, I couldn't understand, nor get past this point in Paint.NET, so will read through the help files. Rod.

If you are having difficulties with Paint.NET check out the Paint.NET Index page forums. They have some cool plugins to enhance PDN and some knowledgeable folks there who may be able to answer your questions. If you do that and find a good answer please post back.

Gee, thanks Joe, that's exactly what I needed , I also want to find out how to lift a cancel strike from a postage stamp, Rod.

Yep, looks like Joe has come up trumps.

Sorry, "Noise" was my terminology. I should have explained better. I have a Magic Wand tool that highlights and selects areas, when you click on an area of you choice, it takes that colour value and then highlights similar colurs and hues in the surrounding area by the percentage difference. Sometimes you would have to adjust the percentage until all the area you require is selected. Anything left would be "noise" and can be cleaned up using an airbrush tool or eraser....I think that is explained bettr

Re: Seek free paint program.

G'day Jerry, I got the magic wand OK, and lassooed, but acting on the area of choice, I kept ending up with a matrix design, rather than solid colour to deal with. I'll post the paint.NET solution when I have it down pat. Rod.
