ToolBar customizations won't stay (Excel 2000)

    Hello

Has anyone had the problem of ToolBar customizations only staying for the duration of the current Excel session? For some reason mine have started misbehaving, and get set back to default every time I start Excel.

    TIA,
    Jeff

Re: ToolBar customizations won't stay (Excel 2000)

I asked a similar question <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=xl&Number=61234&page=4&view =expanded&sb=5&o=0&part=>This Thread</A> without getting any replies. The workaround I came up with is:

    1. Search on the C: drive for files named Excel.xlb, which is the name that XL2000 saves the current settings under.

    2. Rename all these files and note their names and locations.

    3. Note your Default file location: in XL (Tools/Options/General), this should be an XLStart folder.

    4. With the modified toolbars/menus in place, close Excel.

    5. Search C: for Excel.xlb, there should be only 1 such file, and it should contain your new toolbars/menus.

    6. Copy this file across to your Default file location: that you noted in 3.

    7. Close XL then reopen it. Your new toolbars/menus should be working.

The problem appears to be that XL2000 does not (necessarily?) take its Excel.xlb file from wherever it saved it when XL was last closed. Whether this is a bug or my shortcoming I know not. I found so many folders named XLStart on my machine I became confused, so I worked out the workaround.

    That's quite a workaround <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I'll give it a try, thanks!

This may have to do with different users set up on your computer. If that is the case, XL will keep a different .xlb file for each user, called "username.xlb". I used to experience this problem with a machine that I used on and off the company network.

    Oops, no workee...

The customizations flash for a moment while Excel is starting, but quickly disappear after full startup.

    Odd stuff, this is.

Hi Jan, thanks for your reply

That occurred to me as well, which is why I was scratching my head a bit as to why there weren't any username.xlb files on my machine. I know I used to have at least one -- it's what I used to restore my Office installation with whenever necessary -- but that concept seems to have gone south.

    Any thoughts?

Re: ToolBar customizations won't stay (Excel 2000)

I had a look in the MS KB. Apparently before XL2000, XL saved the .xlb file as username8.xlb for network users and Excel8.xlb for non-network users (the numeral differed with the version of XL).

I did not find anything in the KB about .xlb files in XL2000. However I use my computer on the same network as when I used XL97, and whereas in XL97 my xlb file was Mike8.xlb, in XL2000 it is Excel.xlb.

I wondered if putting my .xlb file in my XLStart folder was overwriting the .xlb file that XL was installing at startup, but when I removed the XLStart .xlb file, then altered a toolbar, shut down, and restarted, the toolbar change had not been saved.

Has anyone had custom toolbars/menus save and 'stick' at shutdown as they did in previous versions of XL?. If so where is your .xlb file being stored, and what is its name?

    Hi Michael

Thanks for digging. I'll keep trying myself, as well, and if I find out anything I'll report back here.

If your customisations flash for a moment it suggests that they are in your .xlb file but then something is overwriting them. What happens if you go into XL and open the .xlb file from there?

I have noticed that Excel.xlb file is updated each time XL is shut down which suggests that changes are being saved (or does it?). This would be consistent with what you are seeing, ie changes being installed then overwritten.

    Hi Michael,
My Excel.xlb file is stored in Cocuments and Settingsroryapplication datamicrosoftexcel in WIndows 2000. That's one directory above my xlstart directory and if I reinstall, I simply copy my backup version of the .xlb to that directory and all my customizations are restored. The only thing I have noticed is that I have to open Excel first, customise one of the toolbars so that Excel creates its own Excel.xlb file and then overwrite that copy, otherwise it overwrites mine on first use.
    FWIW.

    Hi Michael

I added a button to a ToolBar, exited Excel, and made a copy of the Excel.xlb file. As you mention, I also noticed the file was updated on close. I started Excel, watched for the button to appear and disappear (it did), and opened Excel.xlb -- the button reappeared. I closed Excel and reopened it, and saw the same results as before -- the button flashed and then went away.

I recently installed Assured Office (by E-Lock -- http://www.elock.com) which adds a custom ToolBar. It just occurred to me that this might be causing the problem, do you think? I opened the VBA editor and tried to remove the project, but all remove capabilities for the project are disabled.

    I might try uninstalling it.

Hi Elvis (I mean Rory <g>)

I gave this a try, but Excel.xlb keeps getting overwritten with the standard ToolBar settings.

    Hi Jeff,
    A couple of quick questions/points:
    1. Is your excel.xlb in your xlstart directory? (it shouldn't be, it should be in the Excel directory one stage up the tree.)
    2. What is in your xlstart directory?
    3. Under Tool-Options-General what have you got in the Default File Location and Alternate Startup File Location boxes?
    Regards,

    Jeff
If your custom toolbar appears when you open the .xlb file after closing and reopening XL, why not just copy the updated .xlb file to your XLStart folder AFTER closing XL (which is what I do in my workaround). That way the custom toolbar will open when you restart XL.

The situation seems unsatisfactory, but then it was not crash hot in XL97 where the latest toolbar (.xlb file)overwrote everything else at shutdown. It would be useful if XL gave a choice of saving the toolbar changes or not at shutdown: ergo that is unlikely to happen.

    Rory
Are you talking about reinstalling XL? If so you would expect to have to reload your custom .xlb file. The puzzle seems to be that XL is saving or updating the custom .xlb file at shutdown, but the custom toolbars do not appear when you restart XL.However if you then open the .xlb file after reopening XL it reloads the custom toolbar, therefore XL cannot be opening that .xlb file at startup, so where is XL getting its settings from at startup?

Re: ToolBar customizations won't stay (Excel 2000)

    Hi Michael,
It sounds to me as though you have 2 xlb files if you can briefly see the customizations and then they disappear. I believe that Excel first opens the one in the Excel directory and then if you have one in XLSTART it opens that one. The customizations should be stored in the one in the Excel directory. This might also happen if you have an alternate startup file location specified - again, what you see will be down to which xlb file is opened last.
    Does that help?

    Rory
