Is it worth removing the files in this directory. What is the prefetch file for?

No, although some "Windows tips" claim that you can improve performance by clearing the prefetch cache, this is not correct. See for example One more time: do not clean out your Prefetch folder! | Ed Bott’s Windows Expertise |. This article also explains a bit about what the folder does.
