    Index to next page

    Don't know if this has ever been raised before - if so sorry - but is it possible to add some facility to the lounge which will allow one, when reading a lengthy post or just rummaging through the passes of subjects, to index to the next page without having to position the cursor over the rather small right arrow? As some may recall from my previous posts my daily quest is to progressively make my mouse redundant by using the keyboard instead. Thank you Dave.

    Page Down doesn't take you to the next thread, or to the next page in a thread split over multiple pages.

    How do you open up a thread in the first place without a mouse?

    WWWwweeellllll as Dave is a lover of keyboard short cuts, all you have to do is use the tab key, admittedly a lot to navigate from link to link, it takes about 3 minutes for each post.......bbbuuutttt <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Regards,
    Hans

    Thanks Hans for your interjection, I was beginning to think I was stupid. I know I'm not the sharpest knife in the box but seeing I had tried all the possible keys on the keyboard and got nowhere I thought I would venture to ask. I find scrolling through the various threads very enlightening and (Yes) of course I have to pick up the mouse initially to open a thread but the point I was making is that as there are for example 13391 threads on WORD alone. Even given the fact that the posts on each page can be read by using the "Down" key that means there are 1,339 pages to scroll through which means still using the mouse well over a thousand times. I know the options for advancing to the next page are to click on the ">>" arrows or the right yellow triangle "►" which are rather small and all I was asking of you experts was, is it not feasible tweak the lounge so that the same action be somehow achieved using the keyboard. Taking post 680301 as an example, it extends to 17 posts [two pages] so the 13391 threads in Word are equal to an even greater number of clicks. Just a thought but if it's not practicable, well tough luck, the mouse must work overtime. Thanks anyway. Dave.

    Re: Index to next page

    To minimize the number of times you have to use the mouse:
    <UL><LI>Go to Edit your display preferences and set the number of posts per page to a high number - the default 10 is rather low; you can go up to 99.
    <LI>Use the Search feature to find posts containing specific words.
    <LI>Use the Tab key to highlight "clickable" items on the page, as suggested higher up in this thread, and press Enter to "click" an item.[/list]The screenshot below shows part of the Edit your preferences page.

    Re: Index to next page

    The reason why I asked how you opened the thread in the first place was to offer an alternative to using the keyboard.

    When in the forum Index, centre-click on the thread you want to open. This will open it in a new tab, and if your preferences are set up suitably, the new tab will have focus. Three or four <TAB> presses should give you focus within the page to allow you to navigate within the thread.

    When you are finished with that thread, press together the <CTRL> + <W> keys to close the tab, and you will be returned to the Index. You should see the originally selected thread surrounded by a dotted line - see attached - and you can navigate to the next thread with two presses of the <TAB> key, or <Shift> + <TAB> - down or up respectively.

    It is possible to select the Forum, then thread, directly from the main page, but this involves a lot of <TAB> pressing as focus starts at the top and has to work its way through a multitude of hyperlinks before reaching the desired location.

    (This applies to Firefox - not sure about other stuff - and assuming no fancy toolbars or whatever.)

    As ever, thanks for your comments, always willing to listen and learn be it from an MVP or casual reader of this much appreciated forum which is perhaps the best I have come across as I have groped my way through this I.T. jungle. Please never forget guys that some of your readers had their milk delivered every morning by a horse draw cart, their was not a TV ariel in sight & pocket calculators were science fiction. Thanks again. Dave.

    In my day, the horses couldn't hold a pencil let alone draw anything <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>.

    But this is progress. Why bother with a multitude of key-presses when a single click does the same job?

    Alternately, if you have the Greasemonkey extension, you can make the triangles larger. Here's a userscript that does that. I think there is a handier way to share these, but I forget how it works at the moment.

    <code>// ==UserScript==
    // @name LoungeNext
    // @namespace http://jeffersonscher.com/
    // @description Triple the size of the Next button
    // @include http://www.wopr.com/*
    var i = document.getElementsByTagName("img");
    for (j=0; j<i.length; j++) {
    if (i[j].src == "http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/next.gif") {
    i[j].style.width = "36px";
    i[j].style.height = "45px";
    }
    }
    // ==/UserScript==</code>
