Upgrade to XP from 97 (2002)

Has anyone done this upgrade and noted any huge obstacles? In my research, I've not come up with anything signifcant. In particular formatting issues, programming issues? I've heard rumor that smart tags creates some document formatting issues but I can't figure out how from my research and infantile attempts at creating them.

For me, the Registration/Activation Wizard is an insurmountable issue. I will not trust my capability to run the program I have paid to use to code that might at any moment decide that I should not be running it!

    Hi suburbfreak,

    Aside from the on-going grumbling about activation issues/rumors <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>, I really haven't heard of any major issues or concerns.

The main item you might run into going from Office 97 to Office XP is the handling of macros. As in Office 2000, instead of the prompt "This file contains macros...Enable/Disable", the Security settings are set to High under Tools/Macro/Security by default. So if you have any 97 add-ins, (either your own, from MS, or 3rd party manufactures) there might be a problem running them.

Other than that, Office XP is different and takes a little to learn all of the "in and outs" and various features. Smart tags, for example are pretty slick, they just take some getting used to and understanding of how they work as with any new feature. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hello,

I don't think you will have any problems upgrading. I run Office 97, 2000 and XP all on the same computer without any problems.

If you are looking for information on programming smart tags go to www.msdn.microsoft.com and search on Smart tags. They have a lot of information and I think they also have some white papers with code examples.
