Opening links in Firefox (v2.x and v3b1)

I had gotten some help a while back on opening a link in IE if Firefox is the default browser (thanks again Jefferson).

But what if IE (7) is the default and you need to open a link in Firefox (to gain access to various extensions at a particular sire)?

I've tried putting a Firefox shortcut in the SendTo folder, but that seems to get caught and crashes.

I tried using the firefox.exe in the command line of the shortcut, but it didn't seem to like that either.

Is there a way to do this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

It happens so seldom to me that I've not looked for any fancier way to do it than this: Wherever I am when I see the link that needs to be opened in the "other" browser, I simply right-click the link and copy it into the clipboard. Then I run the "other" browser which is on my Quick Launch bar and paste the link in there. Sorry, it ain't fancy but I hardly ever need to do it.

How about the FirefoxView extension. When you install the extension in Firefox it adds menu items to the Internet Explorer right-click context menu..

If you right-click on a page in IE you get an option to "View This Page in Firefox", if you right-click on a link in IE you get the option to "Open Link Target in Firefox"

    Al/Tony:

Tony, I use both the "Firefox View" and the "IE Tab" extensions in Firefox, so within FF I can easily go either way. But if IE is the default, then I have to go to the link, copy the url, exit, open FF, paste the link, and then go, so one step has become 5-6 steps.

Al: This has come up because I have iincreased my use of GMail, which is a lot friendlier when used with Firefox. So I'd have to go there, copy, ...etc...

Since this is something I now do several times a day, "cutting the fat" sure would be a help.

That really begs the question... if Firefox is better for GMail, then why is IE your default? Try as I might, I just can't bring myself to love IE7 - and believe me, I've tried.

    Mark:

    My feeling exactly.

still require it, so I like remaining But firstly, I'm waiting fro the extensions to catch up to v3, and secondly you can't get away fro IE, as some sites require it, so I like remaining "flexible".

    Doc:

I'm using it more now as I integrate GMail into my habits.

Actually the solution should have been obvious to me:

A shortcut: "%firefox folder%firefox.exe http://gmail.com" and since I'm always logged in on this machine, it goes right there. The shortcut didn't work without the full FF path included though.

    Chuck

So you're using the beta version of Firefox? Brave man. I gave up betas long ago, and I lost 20 pounds... but at least now I don't pull my hair out.

    Mark:

I don't ALWAYS use betas... and that's why FF isn't my default browser... but "3" is looking stronger than "2", so I like to keep looking...

Heck, I put ON 20 lbs., Regardless of my browser!

I think you might be confusing "IEView" and "Firefox View". You might try Tony's link and see.

Re: Opening links in Firefox (v2.x and v3b1)

    Jefferson:

Within Firefox, there's two extensions I use:

IE Tab, which is used to "control-click" a link when I am (you are) in Firefox that will then open the link in IE, and

Firefox View, which is an extension installed from within Firefox that adds an "Open in Firefox" item to the context menu when within IE.

So I can be in either one and switch. We may well be saying the same thing relating to "Firefox View"... But there IS an IETab extension, that allows engine-switching, as well as external loading in the other browser.

    Jefferson:

Install steps were (even for me) pretty straightforward. You just gotta make sure that the path(s) referred to i both the bat files and the reg entry match up to the actual paths themselves.

    Works great for me.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 14-Feb-08 21:22. Added cross-link to the other thread.)
I edited the IE script to launch a shortcut in Firefox. It has the same three files. I need to dig up the installation instructions from the earlier thread. Hope to add those later in a free moment.
