    Why is hyperlink Blocked:: (2003)

    Dear Loungers,

    I have a newsletter email that I want to include a hyperlink using the mailto protocol. It appears that I successfully insert the hyperlink and specify the mailto address, it would read mailto:ttc.removeme@TheTangoClub.com?subject=REMOV E ME. However on sending the hyperlink is changes to have Blocked:: before it. In fact all my hyperlinks, not just the mail ones have done this, some actaully have severall Blocked:: so I will get something like blocked::blocked::http://www.thetangoclub.com.

    I don't understand what Outlook is doing and why. How can I stop this, is it something in my configuration?

    thanks.......... liz

    I also see this, but the links are not actually blocked. See if the following steps help.

    1. Reset the default E-mail client in Internet Explorer - open IE, select Tools | Internet Options | Programs | in the Email dropdown reselect Outlook, OK out.
    2. If that doesn't help, follow these steps (for Windows XP): Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe, hit Enter, Navigate to the following branch:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareClassesmailto
    and ensure that (Default) is set as "Mailto:URL Protocol". If there is no Default value, from the Edit menu, select New | String Value, Name it (Default), set "Mailto:URL Protocol" as String Value. Exit the Registry Editor.

    Check your Junk E-Mail options - Tools | Options | Preferences | Junk E-mail button. At the bottom there is a check box which says "Don't turn on links in messages that might connect ...." If that box is checked and Outlook considers the e-mail unsafe all links will be de-activated (i.e. blocked).

    Joe (or other Loungers) may correct me, he knows more about the internal workings of MSIE, but I believe Outlook 2003 still uses IE for HTML rendering, and certain Registry settings used by a number of apps can be set from IE, so IE settings still affect Outlook. (I also use FF2 on my personal PC.)

    Re: Why is hyperlink Blocked:: (2003)

    It is true that Outlook 2003 uses IE to render HTML e-mails and the IE security settings come into play. But, I think that the anti-phishing security changes that were added with SP-2 may be the culprit here. See Block or unblock links in suspicious phishing messages - Outlook - Microsoft Office Online for an explanation of Outlook behavior when suspicious messages are encountered.

    Thanks, Joe. I think MS is being overcautious in its definition of "links in messages that might connect to unsafe or fraudulent sites" if it's blocking "Mailto:" URIs. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    If the phishing filter categorizes the message as suspicious then all the links are blocked. I've not received any complaints about the phishing filter being overly cautious.

    True, but the blocking behavior doesn't make sense in the context of the OP's question that she is composing the messages with the "Mailto:" URI. (IIUC.)

    Re: Why is hyperlink Blocked:: (2003)

    True. But she says "on sending" the hyperlink is blocked. So, she must have some content that is triggering the phishing filter.
