Forcing Horizontal or Vertical Lines (PPT2007)

    Hi,

When drawing freeform lines in PPT 2003, I used to hold down CTRL to force line segments to be horizontal, 45 degree or vertical. This no longer works in PPT2007. Does anyone know how to force horizontal or vertical segments ?

    Thanks,

Don't you mean Shift instead of Ctrl?

The graphics engine in PowerPoint and Excel 2007 has been dumbed down, and holding down Shift doesn't work correctly any more.
    Workarounds:
    1) Turn on Snap to Grid. This makes it easy to draw horizontal and vertical lines.
    2) Create the drawing in Word 2007, then copy it to PowerPoint. The graphics engine in Word hasn't been downgraded yet. <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>

Yes, thanks, it was SHIFT, not CTRL - I had forgotten.

Can you believe that they have "dumbed down" the graphics engine. I've also noticed when moving an object or group of objects that you cannot drag them smoothly. It becomes very difficult to drag them to where you want because of the delayed dragging.

Thanks for the suggested workarounds, but neither suits me.

    Hans,

    <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15>

    Double <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15>

You might want to move this to the Office board but I thought I'd reply here to start.

With every new release, we always look for the list of new features. This is just the opposite request!

Is there a list for Office 2007 of things we can't do anymore, or at least not as easily with work-arounds? I depend on using SHIFT+line draw in PPT quite a lot. I never use the Snap to Grid. (Probably don't do much in Excel so I won't miss it and I'm sure in SP 99, MS will dumb down the graphics engine in Word.)

This is the 2nd thing I've heard of in the last few days. I think there was something a few days ago discussing customizing "toolbars".

Seems like it might be useful to ask people what they're finding. I have a copy of Office 2007 but have not installed it yet. Things like this make me not want to bother.

    TIA

    Fred

I doubt that such a list exists, but it would be better to ask this question in the General MS Office Suite forum, since it concerns all Office applications, not just PowerPoint.

    Hans,

That's what I thought. I'll put a new post there.

According to PPT 2007 help topic "Draw or delete a line, connector, or freeform shape":

To draw a straight line, click Line , and then drag to draw the line.
To constrain the line at 15-degree angles from its starting point, press and hold SHIFT as you drag.

I don't have Office 2007, so I can't test, but there are several newsgroup threads complaining that this feature doesn't work in PowerPoint 2007 - see for example Shift+Click on line, PP2007 BUG: Sizing lines

Re: Forcing Horizontal or Vertical Lines (PPT2007)

I have PPT 2007 loaded and the straight line tool allows you to constrain the lines to 45 degree increments by holding the shift key.

The curve tool (aka freeform line) doesn't appear to be restrained by Ctrl, Shift or Alt in any combinations. The Alt key does allow you to avoid the snap to grid setting though.

Judging from my brief experience and your quote from the help file, I'd say the help file is at best, misleading.

As Andrew says the shift key doesn't constrain the line with the freeform tool. There's also a strange bug. Try this draw a vertical or horizontal line (not freeform - just a line) Hold down shift and try to stretch it a ttle , veer of the straight and narrow and the line zooms to infinty and beyond!

    John,

I had noticed that behavior in earlier version of ppt. Since I have not upgraded to 2007, I guess that bug is still going to bug us.

The problem doesn't occur in my PowerPoint 2002 (SP3).
