Another XP PC to Vista laptop sharing problem

    Hi folks,

When I connected my Vista laptop to my XP desktop on an "infrastructure" network, everything was fine except that the laptop and the printer USB-cabled to it were invisible to the XP. I had gone through all steps of turning on file and print sharing, etc. After a couple of days, I finally found a checkbox about 10 mouse clicks deep, in the Vista Manage Wireless Network Connection> Properties that was unchecked. The checkbox is for "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks."

When I checked this box, the laptop and its printer and files finally showed up in the XP Network Places. The problem is that this box unchecks itself from time to time, disabling the connection from the XP to the laptop. (The laptop can still access the XP.) This is not too serious because I can walk to the laptop and make 10 mouse clicks and recheck it, but it sort of defeats the purpose of the network.

Anybody know what is unchecking this box? It stays checked when I reboot.

    Any ideas will be appreciated.

Can you walk us through these 10 mouse clicks so we can see what and how you are doing things?

Certainly, thanks very much for asking. One way to get to the checkbox on the Vista laptop is to click start, control panel, double click network and sharing center, click manage network connections, right click the icon for the wireless network connection, select properties, and click continue on the user account control dialog. Then the wireless network connection properties dialog appears, and I recheck the file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks box and click OK. Then I click away a couple of leftover windows for a total of 12 clicks

This makes the Vista laptop, its public folder and "printers and faxes" accessible from Windows Explorer on the XP desktop (for an indeterminate time (The XP is connected to the router with ethernet cable and the laptop, by its wireless adapter. All the printers are connected by USB cable. As far as I know I've gone through all the usual steps of turning on network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing, and printer sharing on both computers. Also I tried mapping the laptop public folder to the Z: drive on the XP as suggested in Woody's _Windows_Vista_Timesaving_Techniques_for_Dummies_ (Page 366). The drive mapped OK but fails to work when the box comes unchecked.

These are used at home with no children, etc., so we don't use passwords on our accounts and have left password protected sharing off.

Thanks very much for looking into this

Try right clicking the "The network" icon (You do have this showing right?) in the "SysTray" (Notification area), and select Network and Sharing Center".
The click the "View Status" on the right side, then in the next pane, "Properties" and you should be at the needed listing.

This will save you a few clicks.

As to why is is NOT staying, I do NOT know. I use a wired connection most of the time. But every time I have used the wireless, I have never found this to unchecked.

Thanks for the tip, DaveA, that definitely whittles off some clicks And thanks for thinking about this... I wonder if it has anything to do with the firewall or extra security features of Vista.

What third party AV, Spyware, firewall and just pain security software are you running?

Once you post, your signature becomes part of the post. So if you change your signature, the change will be be applied to new posts, not to existing ones. (You can go and edit the old ones, but I don't think it's that important. The decision is up to you, however).

Re: Another XP PC to Vista laptop sharing problem

Yes, I was thinking about that too. I'm running Kaspersky Antivirus 7.0 (was 6.0 when this started). That's really all I'm running except for Windows Vista firewall and the hardware firewall that comes with the Linksys Wireless-N router (WRT300N). I suppose I could switch these things off and see if the problem goes away, then, if it does, switch them back on one at the time to find the culprit. Another thing I could do is check very carefully for a couple of days and try to find out when it happens. I haven't gone to this trouble because I'm working at the laptop most of the time now and seldom need to access it from the desktop PC.

Also, I was hoping someone would know the answer off the top of their head

P.S. (New edit) When I have time, I'll try working my way through the steps in StewartR's <post#=589,883>post 589,883</post#> which was just cited by JoePerez in <post#=688,198>post 688,198</post#>

Just noticed I invented a new spelling for "Sargent" in my signature. I've corrected it in my profile, but it won't seem to go away in old posts

    Thanks to all

Thanks for the info, Hans. I once belonged to a forum where the old signatures would change when you adopted a new one. Overall I like it better when they don't--it's nice to let the old ones stand for posterity and I guess it would be a bit anal-retentive for me to go back and correct all the old ones, certainly if it would bring them to the top of the thread...after all, this forum is not about me and my signatures

Not really, you are just using the British English spelling!
