Strange taskbar problem (XP Pro Ver 2002 Sp 2)

When I open applications, no buttons appear in the taskbar and when I minimize any window, it just goes away (they seem to disappear to various places at the bottom of the screen), leaving no indication that they're still running. To switch to another running program, I have to use the "three-finger salute" to invoke the task manager. I have to be careful not to shut down with invisible programs running.

This happened on two of my PCs (one since crashed) some time after a friendly technician installed Office 2003 and some other software on them. Neither he nor any help desk people I've asked have ever heard of this or have any clue about what caused it or what to do about it. I didn't notice the problem until some time after the software was installed. Once, the problem went away for a short time on one of the PCs then came back and stayed.

All ideas are welcome

Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

See Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP and try the following items:
Restore the Task Bar to Default Settings (line 99, left hand side)
Restore Taskbar and Start Menu (line 117, left hand side)
Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality (line 164, left hand side)

After you've tried the options previously mentioned, if you still have the problem (and the software to reinstall them), you might try removing the programs your "friendly technician" installed, one-at-a-time, to see if that corrects the issue.

This has fixed the problem, Hans!!! You wouldn't believe how long I've been dragging windows around to keep from minimizing them. I did all three registry tweaks you suggested before rebooting, so I'm not sure which one fixed the problem, but I think it was the third (line 164 Left), which was the only one that actually called for a reboot. By the way, it said it would reboot itself and I waited 15 or 20 seconds and nothing happened, so I went ahead and rebooted, then I was afraid I'd interrupted what it was doing, but maybe not, since it's fixed.

This is worth waaaay more than the price of admission.... I'll have to go buy some T-shirts, mugs, etc

PS Thanks very much also to Doc Watson, but luckily I didn't have to go to the extreme of trying to replace the software.

Salutations to all!
