iCalendar (OL98/OL2K, Corporate using Exchange 5.5)

A secretary has just asked about "forward as iCalendar" on the Actions menu for Outlook calendar - which I for one had never even seen before, let alone used.
Can someone explain what this is, please? Outlook help gives a factual explanation, but I can't understand when we might want to use this and why, given that the whole company is on Corporate.
    TIA

it wouldn't be needed for internal use, but if she wanted ot send it to someone using a different calendar program, she could send it as an ical.

It's also the recommended way to send to intenret addresses if the server strips RTF from outbound messages.
