Files in use by another user (Office 97)

I know its old - its a friend's PC is my excuse.

When she opens any Word document she gets a prompt "this file is in use by BOA TIC" and the options COPY or CANCEL. If she clicks CANCEL she works on the document as normal, of she clicks COPY a second copy is created.

When she opens an Excel sheet, she always gets a message "this file is already open for another user" (or words to that effect) but she can hit CANCEL (so it can't have been !) and all is normal.

What on earth is going on, I've not seen anything like this before ?

    Thanks

Does she have sufficient permissions on the files/folders?

    Hi Martin

Do a seach of the C: Drive for Normal.dot and see if how many copies you have. This sometimes happens if there is a copy of this file in the start up folder.

Thanks, I'll have a look for multiple normal.dot files, though that doesn't explain the excel behaviour ?

Does Excel say that the workbook being opened is already in use, or another workbook such as Personal.xls?

    Hans,

It says the workbook that is being opened is already in use (not another one). And, as I say, oddly when you click cancel it just carries on as normal.

I have no idea what causes this. Since it occurs with both Word and Excel, it appears to be deeper than just a program setting. Does a similar problem occur in other applications?

Most likely this problem is caused by undeleted Excel temp files.

    - Logon to the computer as Administrator, or, if there is only one account with Administrator rights, boot to the Safe mode.
    - Navigate to Cocuments and Settings< username >Local SettingsTemp (it is hidden, sytem folder).
    - Delete all files in this folder, especially Excel temp files (~DF????.tmp). You couldn't delete these files, if you logon as < username > in Normal mode.
    - Logoff or restart your computer from Safe mode.

Also check the folder in which this file(s) is (are) in and delete the "Temp" files that are there. Every time a file is NOT closed properly the temp files for THAT file will be left behind, and Word or Excel thinks the file is in use.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

The easiest way to navigate to this folder is to type %TEMP% into the address bar. This may save a bit of navigation time.

If clicking cancel nevertheless displays the document on the screen, the user might be double-opening the document.
