Can't roll back driver or uninstall its win update (Vista Home Premium)

When I ran a Windows update for the display driver (Mobile Intel[R] 945 Express Chipset Family) on my Lenovo Vista laptop, it briefly went to a lower screen resolution, bunching up my 50 or so screen shortcuts. I thought this might just be part of the installation process, so I decided to try it out for awhile. It continued to do this about once a week, so I decided to roll back to the original driver.

It told me that the driver was functioning ok, and the roll back option was grayed out (indicating that there was not a previous driver to roll back to), so I tried to uninstall the Windows update which gave me the driver update.

When I viewed "Installed Updates," only four were shown. Actually I have installed almost 200 updates. I was under the impression that any individual Win update could be uninstalled.

So I decided to go to a restore point before the day I installed this "optional" windows update (20 Dec 07). I was surprised to see that only 6 restore points were available, going back about a week.

I took a look at the display drivers in the system info and it gave what looked like total information for the same driver twice, with only very tiny differences.
So it looks like I'll be playing Rubik's Cube with my shortcuts every few days

This may not be a very serious problem, but if anybody has any ideas, I'd like to know what's going on.

Is there a driver for your laptop on the Lenovo site? If so, probably best to download and install it. I make it point NEVER to download or install hardware drivers from MS.

edited to add: You should also be able to roll back the driver. Click on Start and in the start search box, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes). When devmgmt.msc appears in the programs list, right click on it and select "Run as Administrator". See if the driver rollback option is there now.

Re: Can't roll back driver or uninstall its win update (Vista Home Premium

I approached the device manager as you suggested, and the roll back button was still grayed out. Since I was there, I clicked "search the internet for a driver" and was told that windows thought I had the best one available. I went to the Lenovo site and they had one with a 7-day newer date but what appears to be an older version number:

    1) Recently installed driver version = 7.14.10.1350 "Driver Date" = 10/18/2007

    2) Driver at Lenovo site version = 7.14.10.1214 "Release Date" =10/25/2007

Lenovo gives instructions to install the driver (and uninstall it), but they do not say to uninstall the current driver first. Should I do that, or is it taken care of by the installation .exe? If I uninstall the current driver, will I be able to operate the laptop with a generic driver as when booting in secure mode? Do you think there is likely to be a significant difference between these two drivers and that the possibly slightly prior version (#2) may be better? Also, should I try the Intel site?

I guess you can tell I'm beginning to get cold feet about this and wondering if this problem is worth changing drivers, etc

    Thanks for your help, John

    Doug,
Normally, best practise is to uninstall the current driver. When Windows reboots, it will most likely come up in 640 X 480 res., but that's OK. Then, install the new driver. As for any significant difference in the two drivers, I would doubt that there would be much, but that's strictly speculation. You could try the Intel site, but in most cases, Intel does not publish notebook drivers. Notebook drivers are manufacturer and model specific and are modified and customised for the particular notebook in which they are installed.

I'm baffled as to why you don't have the "roll back" capability, especially if you ran Device Manager "as Administrator". Perhaps someone else has a solution to that.

(Edited by DougC3 on 21-Jan-08 14:57. Update)
John,
Thanks very much for bearing with me on this. I think it won't roll back because it was a bad installation and thinks it doesn't have another driver to roll back to. (I went to device manager as administrator twice, just to be sure I was doing it right.) When I installed the updated driver, I just let windows update do it, foolishly thinking it would be done right. I think it failed to uninstall the old one and somehow garbled the two. When I go to system information > view advanced information... > components > display, it shows information for two drivers, but both have the same version number and the information for the second one is incomplete. I don't know what's normally shown here and am just guessing about the significance.

However, the problem never happened before the attempted update, and it's still happening pretty often, especially when I am using the laptop on batteries and it goes into sleep mode, so I am going to try replacing the driver.

    UPDATE EDIT:

I installed the driver from Lenovo and it seemed to go without a hitch. The readme gave more complete instructions which said to uninstall the old driver first. The system info still gives the partial repeat of the driver information, with both entries having the new version number, and the roll back option is still grayed out in Device Manager, but I don't think this will be a problem. Everything is working fine so far! If the problem comes back, I'll try something else, maybe call Lenovo--this thing is stiill in warranty

    Thanks again!
