Backup (XP Home SP2)

I'm running XP Home SP2
2 Questions:
1 I'm trying to get into the habit of doing good backups
I've tried a couple of programs and the one that seems to create a backup without problems is "Xxclone"
I haven't needed to try a restore. Does anyone use Xxclone and do you like it?

2 Does anyone know what ".vob" files are? They seem to take a long time to back up.

Thanks,

JohnS

1.) Sorry, I don't know anything about Xxclone. I think you'll find that many in the Lounge use & like Acronis - True Image. Also, see TeraByte Unlimited :: Boot Manager :: Partition Manager :: Drive Image :: Disk Copy :: Drive Wipe :: Hard Drive Utilities and Norton Ghost 12.0: System Restore - PC Backup Software for other options. BTW, I noticed that the version for Xxclone is 0.58. This usually means it is still a test version. If you wish to test out software such as this that is fine. But, I'd be reluctant to entrust my machine to a test version of any backup software as my sole method of recovery.

2.) VOB is typically a DVD video movie file. See File Extension .VOB Details for an explanation. DVD files are often very large. That is probably why they take a long time to backup.

One of the selling points is it's Free.

is always a point. But consider this. You've invested a considerable amount of time, money, and energy in getting your PC to whatever state it is now in. You've probably got either pictures, video, music, or just data that would be difficult if not impossible to replace. So IMO, a few dollars spent periodically on good backup software is a small price to pay for knowing that you've got a good backup.

I couldn't agree more with what Joe said. Too much time and personal data involved to take a chance with untested (read, not known or well recommended by the mainstream computer user & magazines) backup software.
