    Routers and Firewalls

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

Can a DSL modem all by itself work as a hardware firewall, or must we have a router to accomplish that?

I have a single user who got himself a new DSL connection and he was advised to get a router for a hardware firewall

Is he nuts to buy a router?

Check to specifications at the modem's vendor site. If the DSL modem is just a modem he is not nuts to buy a router. Defense in depth (i.e. multiple levels with hardware and software) is good.

    Re: Routers and Firewalls

If the modem is really just a DSL modem it does not provide you with protection! Many modems these days also have built in routers/firewalls so you need to know exactly what the hardware is capable of. . With a plain DSL modem connection to the internet a user should also add a router with firewall features (network address translation being simple and effective feature) and use a software firewall as well. Some consider the combination of a router and the built in Windows firewall to be sufficient. Others make good cases for having a good, modern software firewall other (and better) than the Windows firewall.
