    word templates

I use Windows 98 I just "upgraded" from Word 97 to Word 2000, and I am confused about where to put new templates. I went to the Office site and downloaded a couple of templates that I liked. I put them in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates1033" where all the rest of my templates are. However, when I go into Word and File!New, I don't see the templates in any of the "tabs." I would like one to appear in the "Other documents" tab. The other is an Excel template and I don't see it when I open Excel and use File!New. How does Office 2000 handle this? I think it was much different in Office 1997. Thanks.

By modifying the file location of templates under Tools, Options, File Locations to C:Program FilesOffice 2000Templates1033, you can create a specific folder at that location and if you save a template into the folder it will appear as a tab when you choose File, New

    Re: word templates

Thank you for this information. It clarifies somethings. However, all of the "standard" templates that I installed with Office are all lumped together in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates1033." How is it that those templates are organized into the "standard" tabs in Word's File!New? What is it that tell the templates what tab to be in? When I took your advice, some of the templates seem to be duplicated in two tabs--and I want to change that. Some templates appear to be in tabs different than the ones that seem logical to me. How can I change that? Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, Word 2000 decided to change the way tabs worked in File New. The ones that are installed by Word 2000 in 1033 are hardcoded, so you can't change where they are. Not without a lot of trouble. Word internally knows where they are. You'd have to copy them to a place that Word didn't find, uninstall them, & then create your folders & copy them back inside. I'm not postive, but I think if you ever use detect & repair, Word "repairs" the template tabs.

    Hope this helps.

Actually, a bit of a late reply- but I just came across this article which might help:
