Splitting Table rows across pages (2003 SP2)

Dear Loungers,

Usually I don't like to split table rows so all my tables have the "split row" check box unticked. However I have a situation where it makes sense. What I can't get my table to do is split across a page. I wonder if it is because there is a table within the table? To describe it more precisely:

It is a one row & column table i.e. a box with "split row" checked; it contains text, the heading pragraph has keep with next set but none of the other paragraphs use this. In the middle of the paragraphs there is another table of several rows and columns, this table has "split row" unchecked.

What affect the split row characteristic operating (other than the check box)?

Could you make a copy of the document, replace the text with some dummy text and attach it? Thanks.

When I have had similar problems in the past the first things I do are:
<UL><LI>Select the entire table and use Format Paragraph to ensure that Keep with Next is clear for every paragraph.
<LI>Select the inner table and clear Keep Rows together for every row[/list]If this clears the problem then you can reapply the row and paragraph characteristics one at a time to see if you can get the behaviour you want.

here it is, I think only the formatting that I want is "actively" on. In other words the "internal" table is meant NOT to brak across a page so it has keep together. It's probably obvious but I can't find it,

I cleared all Keep with Next for every paragraph and set all Allow Row to break across pages for every table row.
I then set Keep with next and cleared Allow Row to break across pages for all paragraphs and rows in the inner table.

This allows the outer table to break across pages correctly, but now the inner table splits in the middle, ignoring the Keep with Next!!

I don't understand why it works this way, but it's caused by the "Keep with next" setting of the first paragraph in the outer table. As soon as you clear this check box, the cell splits over two pages. Strangely enough, you can tick the check box for the other paragraphs in the outer table and the cell will remain split. As soon as you tick the check box for the first paragraph again, the table jumps to the next page...

I first noticed this but in Word 2003 - it was never a problem for me in earlier versions of Word. The first paragraph in the table seemed to set the pattern only in that version of Word (I haven't tried in Word 2007 yet)

Can I just say I love this forum? My team was pulling their hair out, wondering why the table was starting on the next page after only two rows on the first page. I had run into this problem a long time ago, but couldn't remember where to start. So weird, but so nice that I could come out here and find this practically instantaneously. The only thing I needed to do after selecting the table, was un-check "Keep with next" in the paragraph settings. So non-intuitive, so nice to have the answer readily available. So thank you!
