find duplicate files (XP)

I have a bunch of cd's and dvd's containing periodic and sporadic data backups. I'm putting them all on an external hard drive and I need a program that will identify the identical files and make it easy to delete them. I can find the duplicate files relatively easily using "Directory Printer" from Karen's power tools and comparing the Hash numbers, but creating a batch file to delete the duplicate files is a bit of an effort. Seems to me that there should be a "Find Duplicate and Delete Selected Files" shareware/freeware program that will do what I want.

Any recommendations?
Thanks.

Take a look at WinMerge to see if what they call "folder compare" will do what you want. I realize it's supposed to be for comparing text files, but maybe the folder feature will do something for you. I don't really know for sure, as I only use it for comparing text or html files.

Re: find duplicate files (XP)

Some year ago or so I had to use some program to help find duplicates after a system crash (comparing old backup files with those retrieved during the "surgery" to save files, yep not doing backups frequent enough, but at least the HDD wasn't damaged).

I think it was DoubleKiller I used that time. I didn't search all that much for alternatives, since it did what I needed. And you can save the results (export results), delete or move files. Though, I have to say I have not used the program since (due to no need).

If you like you can take look at their site, there is a free basic and a pro version. They have screenshots etc. also.

Use DUPFINDER.EXE from Windows Support Tools.

If Support Tools were not installed (the default location is Program FilesSupport Tools), you can install it from your Windows XP Installation CD ( SUPPORTTOOLS ) or download from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

(Validation required).

The site you mention appears to be some kind of search engine for software, and it tries (in vain) to pop up windows on my PC...

Thanks, Hans.
I downloaded this program ages ago; used it and was - still is - very happy with it; took the url from its About screen.
Now it seems, that site went bad. You may still download the original Dupsetup1100.exe fro Tucows or from winsite.

I use Dupe Checker Pro, available HERE. The registered version is $40, but I think you can have a trial period. It does a lot of work, and it may take a long time if you have many files.

Re: find duplicate files (XP)

I like and use CloneSpy. It's free. Some blurb from the features page:

With CloneSpy you can process files which

* are duplicates
* are duplicates and have the same file name
* have the same file name
* have the same file name and (approximately) the same size
* are zero bytes long

CloneSpy offers you a complete mechanism for determining which duplicate or same-name files should be removed. It is also possible to leave this decision up to the individual user.

CloneSpy can handle equal files by

* deleting redundant files
* moving redundant files to a specific folder
* exporting a list of all equal files without removing any files
* deferring file operations on redundant files to a batch file where you can apply arbitrary file operations

Hope this helps

FYI

I tried all of the suggestions and found the free version of DoubleKiller met my requirements and was easy to use.
