Project is unviewable (Word 2000 SR1)

I have a document which was working fine this morning. The document contained five macros. Now, all of a sudden, when I open the document, I cannot edit the macros; I get the error message "Project is unviewable". When I go to Tools, Macro, Macros, and change to my document, the five macros are listed. However, if I click on the Organizer, the macros do not appear. Even weirder: The macros all execute perfectly. What happened, and how do I fix this? I stand to lose days of work if I can't figure this out...

Hi Gary,

This does sound weird. Just a few grasp-at-straws questions:

Is it a document or a template?
If by chance it is a template, is it by chance located in the Startup directory or loaded as an add-in? (would show that in Tools>Templates & Add-Ins).
If by chance it is loaded, are you getting at the macros by first opening the document that contains the macros, or are you trying to get at the macros via the VB Editor, but without the loaded file being open.
Are you by any odd chance opening the file in Word 97 now (VB projects that are password protected in Word 2000, will run but are unviewable in Word 97)?

I'm sure none of the above are it, but they're first questions that come to mind..

Gary

Try copying these macros using organiser, to another template, and view them in that new template.

As I said in my original post, when I click on Organizer, the macros do not even appear.

Gary -

It is a document, which had been originally created in Word 7.0/95, but which had been converted and saved many times in Word 2000, which is what I was using to retrieve it.

At various stages of development, I had edited the macros in this document. The only thing that I did after this was to assign a menu command to a custom spell-check macro, and remove the stock Spell Check command from the menu.

Sorry Gary, I'm stumped.

Another grasp at straw: have you tried opening this file on another machine (and perhaps with a different version of Word on it?)

Yes, as a matter of fact, I tried to open the document on a co-worker's PC as soon as I discovered the trouble. No luck. As far as trying to open the document with another version of Word, I'm afraid we don't have any available, other than an old WFW 3.11 machine running Word 2.0, which isn't going to help much...

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking that the document somehow became corrupted, although I have yet to find anyone else who this has happened to. Thank goodness, I had sent a preliminary version out for review, and that person still had a copy of what I sent them. I have most of what I had built, which is better than nothing.

Gary,

I think this question from Gary Frieder's above post holds the answer to your question: "If by chance it is loaded, are you getting at the macros by first opening the document that contains the macros, or are you trying to get at the macros via the VB Editor, but without the loaded file being open"

I get the exact same message "Project is Unviewable" when I try to open the macros in my office-wide global template "WD97_39.DOT" without remembering to first open the template in Word because that template is protected.

Re: Project is unviewable (Word 2000 SR1)

To quote my original post:

Now, all of a sudden, when I open the document,

I've tried it with the document open, closed, through the Organizer, etc. It's happened to two different documents now. I've looked all over the MSKB, not much help there either, except for a couple of references to digital signatures.

What's very strange is that I've had this happen to a file that I am certain was viewable when I saved it to our EDMS. I opened a read-only copy of the document, was working on it when, all of a sudden, it locked up on me also. Now, I cannot even launch the document and work on the macros. Any copy of the same document on my hard drive, H: drive, even in a Sent Mail message, exhibits the same behavior. And they do not point to a central template, other than normal.dot. And yes, I've even tried deleting my normal.dot and letting Word create a new one.

I pride myself on not giving up on a problem until I have a solution, but this one's getting the best of me.

Hi Gary,

After it locked up on you did you search for all ~$*.do? and ~.tmp files and delete them?

I can't reproduce this now, but I recall a similar situation where the Owner file (~$.dot) caused a project to be unviewable due to others having the template loaded.
