    Page / Chapter Numbering (2003)

I am producing a multi chapter document that calls for chapter numbering 1-1 (chapter 1 page 1) , 2-3 (chapter 2 page 3). I have attempted the insert/page number feature as well as the header footer feature. It is simply kicking my butt. Please advise.

Re: Page / Chapter Numbering (2003)

Microsoft describes one way to generate chapter numbers in this article: HOW TO: Include Chapter Numbers in the Header or Footer in Word 2002 Documents. Does that look helpful?

Here are a couple Lounge threads to consider as well:

Chapters and page numbering (Word XP)
Chapter number & title in header (2003)

Re: Page / Chapter Numbering (2003)

I read the material and used it on a test page. No Joy! The style of the document is as such:

In the header left justified "Chapter 1 Administration" (these are Header 1 Styles and Formats), right justified the page #, subsequent pages will simple read "Administration"
    Section Break Next Page
Chapter 2 Planning, right justified the page #
    ect.

I do intend to creat a TOC and Index upon completion as well as a forward (prior to the TOC) I would like for the page numbering to begin with Chapter 1 as 1-1 and so on.

I have attached a sample document that shows chapter+page numbering in action.

If you still have problems, could you attach a small sample document?

Hans see attached. What you did is exactly how I would like to number except that I want to put the Chapter in the header as depicted in my example. Additionally, I do not want to have the 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1 showing in the text of the document as depicted in my example. Of course, you can see my TOC did not come out properly!!! Of course, I can adjust if necessary.

Hans: I adjusted yours a bit to mirror what I am attempting to achieve. The 1.1, 1.1.2, etc may be ok. I will try them in my doc. Of course, keeping the Chapter in the header is preferable. How do you get the 1-1 for the page number?

You can include the chapter number in the page number in the Page Number Format dialog. There's a button to open this dialog on the Header and Footer toolbar.

In the attached document, I have removed the duplicate "Chapter" in the header for the first page of each chapter.

Re: Page / Chapter Numbering (2003)

It is possible to have the chapter name and number in the header without the 1.1, 1.2.1 etc. you just need to set Heading 1 to use numbering and clear the numbers from the other headings, like this.

To get the 1-1 in the page numbers you need to define the heading 1 style so that it is automatically numbered, and then from the Insert > Page Numbers dialog box click Format... and select the check box marked "Include Chapter Numbers". Click OK, and then close the Insert Page Numbers dialog without actually inserting the page numbers again.

Edited by HansV to reduce picture in size - please don't post pictures larger than 640 x 480 pixels.

Hans: When I check that box, I receive the attached dialogue box

That must mean that you haven't turned on outline numbering based on the heading styles. It works in the sample documents because outline numbering has been turned on there.

Yes, select Format | Bullets and Numbering, then activate the Outline Numbered tab.
