    True Image Scheduled Tasks

Here's the question: Where someone has one or more TI scheduled tasks setup and installs a TI update, either over the top or by first uninstalling the old, are those scheduled tasks preserved or do they have to be created over again?

The background: Some may remember that I only use TI for full image backup, once weekly and therefore I don't schedule those images. I prefer to do it manually on Saturday morning while I have coffee and read the newspaper. All these years I also make nightly backups of selected user files which tend to change on a daily basis, such as email, bookmarks, spreadsheets, etc. I've been using NewTech Infosystems Backup software for a long time. It has always required me to close several apps like browser, email, clipboard manager, etc. or files get "skipped." I've put up with that nightly closing ritual but now it has gotten to the point that it's balking about lots of OS files that are in use and I can't possibly shutdown. It's probably been caused by one or more of the recent MS XP updates, I don't know.

So, I've decided to start using TI for these nightly backups, probably about 3 gig of MY data, and it's working and tested quite successfully. You knew it would, right? <img src=/S/anigrin.gif border=0 alt=anigrin width=19 height=19> (You can probably find old posts from me in this forum where I had trouble with TI when they first added the capability for selective file backups. But it seems to be working OK in recent vintages.)

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

    Al,

    1. Uninstalling the current version will obviously remove ALL things related to the application. Thus you will have to re-configure the schedule(s). <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    2. I have installed updated versions and all my settings including my schedules have been preserved. YMMV

SOME updates work fine installing over the top . . . SOME don't. Upgrades are a different matter... previous versions should be uninstalled first. Recreating schedules is a very simple and quick procedure, at least for me, and I have little concern should that have to be done.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

Thanks Jeff. You're right, the scripts are not difficult to create and schedule. I only wondered because of their location in Documents and Settings for All Users (see attached). In the past, most of the time, I've uninstalled and re-installed, regardless of update or upgrade. Now I'm gonna admit why I'm asking! I'm probably the biggest Lounge TI procrastinator of the century, for I'm still running Version 10, even though I'm a beta tester and got my copy of Version 11 shortly after it went into production. When Bob Archell started the thread at <post:=670,726>post 670,726</post:> I decided to wait to see what happened but I'm gonna go ahead and make the switch, hoping not to get caught up in his identified problem.

PS The files I backup nightly involve only about 3 or 4 folders, so it's not a big deal at all. I created three scripts backing up files to three different drives, alternating nights.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

Noooo sweat baby. Installed over the top without any problems. My three tasks are still there and seem to be functional. Now I'll have to wait till in the AM to see if my overnight 1 AM task runs OK and successfully.

Now, back to setting any of the options that I need to change and making my bootable CD copies...

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

Well here's a new one for me and I wonder if anyone has come across it before I go to the Acronis forums looking. After getting the TI 11 installed, setup and checked out, I made my bootable CD as I usually do. I don't remember how long Acronis has included this capability, but for the last couple of versions, I usually select to have TrueImage AND Disk Director Suite recorded on the same bootable CD. When I was testing that CD after burning, it offered to boot Disk Director build 2117 which I know is incorrect. I have had for some time the latest DD build of 2160 installed and operational. I just double checked the version that runs from the hard drive and it IS build 2160, but the boot media I just created says 2117.

I went back to the last bootable CD I created at True Image version 10 and the Disk Director copy on that CD also says it is build 2117. Clearly that is NOT the version that is installed on my machine. Has anyone seen this glitch and know what to do about it? Not a show stopper I don't think, but it would be nice to get it straightened out.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

    Al,

Build 2160 is the latest for the stand alone version of DD. Build 2117 is the latest version for the DD SUITE .
I haven't checked on my bootable CD itself but perhaps they used the GUI for DD Suite on the bootable CD app?

A mention of DD Suite is made HERE in the DD forum.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

Uh oh, trouble in River City... switch off discussion of DD and go back to TrueImage.

When I finished installing TI 11 yesterday, I had spot checked my scheduled tasks and they seemed OK, but it turns out they weren't! This morning I discovered that my overnight task has not run. I looked and there was no log entry where it might have tried to run and failed. Once more reviewed the screens within the task and all seemed to be in order. So, I decided to run it to see what result I get with Version 11. As it was running, the source and destination seemed to be OK and I could tell that it WAS backing up the correct folders. At about 86% things stalled, although the little red arrow icon in the tray kept moving. Thinking it might be a bit slow on one or more files, I went to pour my cup of coffee. No dice. I couldn't even get TI to cancel the task - it acted like it would, but nothing happened. I had to use Windows task manager to abort the program.

Long story made short, I uninstalled 11 and put back Version 10. My three tasks are still there, but I went through EACH screen in today's run to be sure. When I executed it, it did it's thing in the expected 10-15 minutes successfully. So, do we have a (another) possible problem with Version 11 ? I don't know, especially if others of you have scheduled tasks that are running satisfactorily.

After some "calm down Big Al" time, I plan to switch BACK to Version 11 and try once more, but that's for later today or tomorrow...

Edited about 40 minutes later. Maybe I WON'T go back to V. 11 for awhile. I just found this: ATI 11 8053 Doesn't Run Tasks - Wilders Security Forums

    Al,

I also upgraded True Image V10 to True Image V11 yesterday and my overnight scheduled task completed successfully last night

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

Thanks Stuart. A couple of questions, if I may:

    1) Did you upgrade 10 to 11 by installing over the top as I did, OR did you remove version 10 first?
    2) Was the scheduled task newly entered AFTER you installed version 11 or did it carry forward from 10 as mine did?

As you can see, if you and others here are NOT having a problem, I'm searching for differences among us, aside from the fact that it could be something in the background like ZA or Avast, or some other TSR that I've got running ...

    Al,

    Installed over the top.
Same scheduled task, I simply examined each scheduled task and checked the parameters.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

    Hi Al,
Like Suart I have v11 running with 1 scheduled task during the weeknights - an incremental backup at 6pm (my time) weeknights. That scheduled backup hasn't failed yet.
I upgraded from v10 to v11 over the top. 1 thing that might make a difference is that on the weekends I do a full backup and right after go in and modify my scheduled script to switch my main backup file to the newly created file.
So in effect, mostly like Stuart, I do go in and 'view/modify' my script once a week. Not sure if this helps or hurts, but for me it's been working.

    Re: True Image Scheduled Tasks

    Al,

Sorry I can't help much in that area since I don't do scheduled imagingbackups.

I would uninstall what you have now and then reinstall Ver 11 and re-enter any tasks if necessary.
I upgraded right over the old version 10 but again, no scheduled tasks involved. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>
